    HP 3005x/ Grinding noise

    HI,
Noise seems to be coming from fuser. When I disengage unit and run machine grinding is gone. The rollers seem free enough when I turn drive gear on it,but my guess is the fuser. Have you experienced similiar problems on this model(although preety new ).Id order unit, but its still expensive and I like to be a little more sure. Any help would be appreciated, THANKS , ANDY

Troubleshooting noises is always tricky. without looking at the machine no one is going to be able to give you the definitive answer. My guess (as thats all I can give you) is examine the fuser gears for damage. Then do the same to the gears in the machine that mesh with them. It could also be something out of position in the delivery area that is prohibiting the fuser from turning freely. You're just going to have to troubleshoot it. The basic rule of troubleshooting is "eliminate everything it cant be and whatever's left is the problem". If the noise is coming from the back, start with the fuser and investigate from there. If its coming from the middle, start with the cartridge. If its in the front, look in the pick-up area.

      Hp 3005/Noise

      HI,
I know noise is always a pain.I didnt see any physical damage to any gears and delivery unit seems to be free spinnining. When I cycle without fusing unit in machine all runs smoothly, although I turn fuser unit fairly freely.Unit basically only has gear that engages machine (rollers are pressure driven (unless Im way off).
      THANKS FOR RESPONSE< ANDY

Try a different cartridge first or simply take it out and let machine go to ready. It may be a bad cartridge and doing this will enable you to rule it out. If you still have grinding, then take a look at the attachment. I've used some of the photos in the service manual. The 2410/2420 series printers have a problem with gear noise from the gears behind the fuser and we have made a special kit to install with the maintenance kit to prevent these problems. The P3005 is similar. Maybe you have a problem with the gears that mesh with the fuser and/or the fuser.

The company I work for sells fusers and our book price for exchange fusers (negotiable) RM1-3740 runs around $170 which is not horrible. I think I'd order the gears right behind the fuser too, but you need to nail it down a little more, so check the drive gears and motor gear.

Remember not to skip the steps of checking the cartridge or you could cost yourself more money in the long run. Troubleshooting requires patience. I'm not talking down to you, I just know when I get in a hurry and skip steps it always costs me in the long run. Hope this helps you.

I dont know if the below parts are it, the parts manual shows the front of the printer not the back, but these are the gears in the fuser area. The bushing for the fuser is not available to my knowledge, because its a relatively new printer.

              Fuser Drive Asm RM1-3746
              PENDULUM ASM RM1-3748
              43T GEAR RU5-0955
              31T GEAR RU5-0960
              65T GEAR RU5-0962
