I get a occasional memory error with the 16mb memory card the machine came with. When I install a new 256mb memory card the LCD is lit and blank. All Three LEDs are lit. It sounds like the printer warms up and is ready to print. I have tried 2 different new memory cards. Am I missing something? Thanks

HP LJ P3005N Memory Error
HP had a different vendor for the network on-board formatter boards on these machines. The firmware is built in to this board. The wrong chip was put on these boards by the vendor. I wrote a service note about it, but I recommend replacing the board because firmware upgrade rarely works in this situation. Here is the service note:
PROBLEM:
Per HP, there is a problem with the Q7812A (base model) and Q7813A (duplex model) in the P3005 Series printers. Problems may be caused by wrong timing values in firmware version 20060807 02.034.0 used in combination with Infineon-B memory chips on the formatter.
SOLUTION:
BeforeInfineon B
Since the printer will not start up, install 32MB DDR-2 DIMM (CB420A) first, then upgrade latest firmware to version 02.034.1 or later.

What type of memory error are you seeing?
If you disconnect the network cable, power up the printer & try to print are you getting the same error?
When you install the old memory again, does it go to ready?
If so, print configuration page and check error log.
If it had too much memory it would just go to max and let you print. The configuration page would list only the max amount.

Whenever you have a blank display its either 1) device engine, 2)formatter, 3) control panel, 4) cable that connects them, or 5) Bad network card, but this one is probably built in. I dont believe its memory related, but check all the steps above to rule out memory problem. If you put in the old memory and you still have the blank screen, you know its not the memory. After that check these steps to trouble shoot the blank display:
- Remove the formatter completely (bad formatter on this machine can interfere with the engine test)
- perform an engine test to verify engine function
- If it passes, the problem is either formatter, control panel or cable that connects them
