HP Designjet 4000 Unable to print via WiFi

Hi all. I have gotten my hands on a Designjet 4000 which does show the online website. I tried submiting a job there. Printer got it and then cancelled it, job doesn't show up at all on logs. I tried with the HP E share... It found it via IP, I get every option available etc, when I tried to print it said "printer didn't respond, make sure it is turned on and connected".

I plan to upgrade the old Hdd and the ram to an SSD and add extra 256mb, unless it can accept more. I plan to upgrade the firmware too as its on version 5.5 if memory serves me right.

I tried doing this all on Windows 11. I'm wondering if it's the printer firmware that's just aging bad. In the morning I got the 08:11 error which dissappeared once she was restarted.

After playing with it for two hours I got it to work...I also was informed there is no SSD controller in the formatter board so I will have to get a bigger HDD and just clone it then I guess.

      UPDATE:

The PSU decided to die and thus is currently being repaired. I will post an update on what exactly blew up once I get it back from my friend. I also recommend if anyone has issue printing from the ancient driver over wifi to just not do it and get a 6 pin firewire cable. I recommend an older Mac Pro too. Unless you have a Windows XP machine, you will encounter quite a lot of wifi related issues with this model.

I've owned one of these in the past. Please tell me how you're connected from your computer to the printer. I don't recall any kind of wi-fi included on these printers. Mine had to be connected to my computer with an ethernet cable. I had a few problems trying to print to the printer from my computer but usually a file type error. Maybe you're referring to the EWS(?) system, which lets you access the printer over the internet, submit jobs, setup preferences, etc. Wi-Fi indicates the printer rec'ves files without any kind of cable, similar to the newer Designjets like the T730.

Please let us know your connection process and what type of files are getting flushed.

Re: replacing the hard drive, you're correct in that a SSD won't work. Is there a reason you need a larger hard drive? You might try printing a smaller file first to be sure it's not a file size issue. I know these printers can sometimes have trouble with Adobe files so maybe just a test page first? Not sure these can be successfully cloned because of HP's proprietary software. Might be worth a try though.

BTW, here's a link to the service manual: https://www.laserexpressinc.com/manu...manual.pdf.pdf

        Lots of help in there.

Hi, apologies for late reply, had to get a new PSU, clean printheads, the problem dissappear until today I loaded a new 847mm roll. Regarding EWS, I can submit a file, printer will start preparing will do so for 2 mins before finishing a print and at the same time printing nothing. Regarding the HP E print and share, the roll is visible but greyed out, same size as before BTW. Refreshing does nothing, I am trying to print from Windows 11, tried it on 10, 8 and 7 with same result. The option is greyed out. The files that I have printed before were pdf and Jpeg.
Could this be a firmware issue?, machine is on version 5.5
I believe and the most up to date is 14.1
I tried connecting it to the mac but the drivers are only for the post script model. What is strange is sent a file from Photos, in windows 11 and it printed it out fine. Doing same from Adobe acrobat for instance doesn't do anything at all. I'm kind of stuck wondering what is the issue here. The machine does have a Lan port, 2 firewire 1394 ports and 2 USBs at least I think they are USB...which are above the firewire ports.

          Looking forward to your reply.
