I got a Laserjet 4200 second hand. Ever since I bought it, it's been very noisy when turned on, especially when printing. Don't believe fuser or toner is the problem. Printer was shipped to me by the seller with the toner still in (despite what HP recommends in the manual) and the toner spilt. I managed to get that cleaned up, but the printer's still very noisy.

Pull the fuser. Check the blue clips that lock it in. They crack and will not hold the fuser in securely. The greatest enemy of knowledge isn't ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. Stephen HawkingComment

I've tried a different toner in the machine too. The printer doesn't recognise the genuine toner in the machine as genuine but it prints fine.Comment

Pull the fuser out and check the gear behind it in the printer (black). See if there is plastic debris around it or if the teeth are worn. The gear is part of the swing plate asm. If you are not a tech its can be tricky to replace, but there are companies like the one I work for that sell swing plate gear kits. If the spring on the swing plate is not missing (when you move the gear up does it swing back to its original position? If so, the spring is on it.) and the white gear behind the black one is not tore up, you could replace just the black gear and the spacer using a gear kit. PM me and I'll email you instructions, if you need them, but if you're not a tech or mechanically inclined I would advise you to take it to a service company.Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".Comment

If the Toner Cartridge on the machine was remanufactured, it is possible that the OPC replacement was made with one lacking inserts inside the substrate. Such a lightweight drum can vibrate with a troublesome harmonic when PCR is charging. The noise starts when the printing is commanded and stops as soon as the printed sheet comes out.Comment

I would also pay close attention to the exit rollers, I've had more than a few machines that needed to be cleaned and lubed in the exit unit because of squeeling or squeeking noises.Comment
