    HP officejet6310 All-in-one

This is another machine we have aquired under a renewed contract. Anyhow it keeps displaying carriage jam. I've cleaned up the pads, carriage rail and surrounding area as it was filthy but I still have the problem. Then when I close the lid and press cancel it makes quite a bit of noise (like the carriage banging on the chassis) and displays reset power. help would be greatly appreciated, many thanx. This is a real BITCH of a customer!!!

Have you applied any grease to the carriage rails? Vaseline works well.

HP inkjet machines have the carriage unit run left to right on a rail & a decoding strip. The decoding strip runs through a sensor on the back of the carriage unit to tell the carriage unit where it is at any one time.
The reason your carriage unit is banging against one end is because the decode strip is most likely fallen off or not through the sensor on the back of the carriage unit. The carriage does not know its 'home position' etc etc.
Every single HP inkjet machine I have seen runs on this method. You are going to have to check the decode strip is in place. Mostly the only way of having a good look is to dismantle the machine.

Attaching a picture of the strip going through the back of the carriage unit.

The inkjet isn't on contract as such, we agreed, or rather the salesman agreed to inlude it along with 17 Ricoh copiers(of which we are a dealer). Very funny comment on the click cost! Anyway thank you very much for the technical reply.

I agree with Wazza, encoder strips come off and they get dirty. Printer can't read position of the printhead (carriage) and it gets rammed to the side. Clean encoder strips with water and soft cloth ONLY. clean encoder sensors. If the inkjets doesnt have encoders it should have a tab on the printhead that actuates a sensor on one end or the other to indicate home position. clean the sensors and make sure that the little tab on the printhead is there and not broken.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".
