49 errors are usually communication or critical firmware error.
I usually do the following:
1. Cycle Power
2. Disconnect cable from computer/network
3. Reseat the firmware
4. Remove memory and add one at a time or try different slot
5. Upgrade firmware for network card (if installed) as well as printer
6. Replace network/parallel cable
7. Replace firmware DIMM, Formatter, or both (sometimes memory as well)
8. Service manual for this machine also mentions DC Controller, but I've never had to replace it for this kind of error on any other machine. That doesn't rule it out, only it's the last thing I would try.
Oh...HP's website had this to say about the .FF81 detail:
"A 49 error indicates that the print processor could not understand or execute an instruction within a file or cannot interface with an accessory, DIMM, or EIO device. However, the 49.FF81 error is most commonly associated with the EIO Hard Disk"
If there is a Hard Disk installed, disconnect and remove it when you disconnect from the network. See if your problem goes away. Then reinstall only that, and see if the error comes back. It may be necessary to initialize the hard drive whether or not you have one installed (I had a 9000 once that thought it had a hard drive and there was none installed. I initialized the hard drive (yes...even though it was not there) and the problem never returned. It was confused, I guess. Print Configuration & menu page, in case anything important disappears. Press right side of start button ***during*** memory count that begins just when you power up the printer. Press 5. Initialize Disk appears, then press 6. Then wait until it completes the sequence.
Further note: (this may or may not be related to your problem) HP printers are sensitive to power fluctuations. Make sure it's not plugged into a surge protector.
Hope this helps you. Please post what the solution finally was to help us all.

Reason: add detail
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".
it also has been taking ages to print faxes.. im not sure if that means its taking ages to recieve them or if its taking ages to print once its recieved tho.. sounds like that latter..
