Need someone with a C7780C Designjet 800PS to load an ISS for me

Yep 73 was the tornados that started near my parent's place near Hardinsburg and rolled along the Ohio through Brandenburg, Louisville, etc all the way up to Zenia Oh. I helped clean up a lot of that. I'm down the Western Ky Parkway from Elizabethtown which is just south of Ft Knox so I'm actually slightly SW. Well so much for anonymity, the fact you were a Brownie tells us you arent a boy ;-)

Sounds like the EEROM is corrupt, just like the one I had which means doing an EEROM clear. If you have another C7780C around you're ok but otherwise you're going to need to either find a working C7780C or send it off to someone that has one like I did, to have it loaded then go through my previous post.

The plotter is saveable, just going to take a little manipulation and patience to clear the EEROM and get the EEROM set to the proper serial and model.

Yep, that's what I was afraid of :-( I have no idea, at the moment, where to locate another plotter and person willing/able to do this since both you and Duct tape have since sold yours. Any chance your buyers might be up for it? Just a thought.

Doh! Forgot one last question: would you recommend buying a new ISS from HP as you did or just sending this one to get loaded? I'm seeing $150 from a parts supplier but am hesitant to buy if this is not the fix.

Since the resale value of the plotter and scanner combo is so high and there is a chance of the EEROM being screwed up it might just be easier and more reliable to get a new one. Besides you can always correct the load in the old one once the machine is up again and keep it as a backup, or just sell it as a used working ISS.

If the one you get looks different it should be ok. The one I sent out was taller and larger than the one I got back (I had the person that loaded it keep the brand new one and send me their older one so they got that for the hassle of doing this for me since he wouldnt take money for the trouble). I thought at first it was only partial but the newer style ISS is smaller than the old style with the lower catch. EEROM is visible on the older, hidden up inside on the newer smaller one.

Cross your fingers that the EEROM is good on your electronics unit but since it took an emergency firmware load its likely good. Mine wouldnt take the firmware but was still ok once I got the model info corrected. You might check with designjetpartsfast.com and see if tom bush has any working pulls for less. I think he told me $100 shipped when I asked.

You must be talking to becandcall - no way firmware was getting updated on mine without the model being properly set and until EEROM was cleared the machine was locked up in the startup. Only way to do it is to clear EEROM, install either a good ISS or electronics unit that is loaded from a machine with the same model number and tell it that the opposite was installed so it backs up the temp unit's EEROM to the normal unit of the machine. Mine was done and all is well and the new owner is chugging along with it fine.

Dude, trust me the first thing you should have done was update the firmware. I am very familiar with all Hp plotters, and any wide format machine out there. A chimp can fix it.

Really? How long have you been doing these (not that long if you still use the term dude- just kidding). You do realize that some machines are burned on chip right? Have you come across a hung/locked 500 or 800 model Designjet? It will let you get to the service menu and you can get a connection in firmware emergency load but it won't take it. If chimps could fix them why does HP require in residence (instructor led) courses for service qualification for new models? Yes it is prudent to attempt firmware update if possible - and if available - but it's not a cure-all. One thing good you bring up is firmware and that when servicing someone's machine that you check for the current firmware version, see if there is a downoadable firmware for it, and if time permits update the firmware. I do so on all printers it allows it on and BIOS on all laptops and PCs that have newer versions.

By the way I believe BECandCALL is a female (if I remember correctly from private messages) so dude isnt really prudent or applicable. We get the point that you've been able to correct problems with firmware but I guarantee the problem that was brought up here even stumps the HP engineers.

FYI - I sold the plotter as is with all our communications printed out for the buyer. He works with HP so I'm hoping he got it up and going. If I find out the fix, I'll definitely post.

Here's someone that actually knows what a PITA this problem is and that firmware on a lockup just won't do it - he was the one that I was able to send a spare ISS to for reload with the proper model number and get the one I had working. DT&G knows his stuff and has a tech there that really knows Designjets inside and out.
