    H/P L/J 4101 mfp...no fax

The hard drive failed on this machine...I put in a new one and it only allows copy/print...not the fax portion....H/P forum has two ideas..one says you have to update the firmware to get the send feature back...I tried this both thru IP and FTP and both start run for a few seconds and then fail...the other person says you have to buy a new firmware module to get the feature back...I dont want more cost...I have also tried a different formatter board but that didnt make any difference.....so how do I get the feature back????

    Thanks
    David

The firmware DIMM is probably defective if you were unable to update it. As far as I know, replacing the DIMM is the only way to do it. Is this the same one you had problems with before? Was the fax module good or did you have to replace it?

If I put the old h/drive back in and if it runs...not very often..the fax feature re-appears...so the fax module is alright..the formatter board is alright...the thing I notice is that the new h/drive interface board...board the h/d is mounted on..is very different in component layout...somebody mentioned that maybe this is causing the new h/d not to communicate fully with the mfp...also as to the firmware dimm ...we have 2 as we have 2 formatter boards and I am sure that the ver on one of them is the latest ...the customer is getting panic attacks due to the lenght of time this has been taking..any ideas especially with the h/d?

Firmware didnt help. Ive have some info from the HP forum that seems to point at the h/d size. Most replacements are 80g when the orig was only 20g...so they say possibly anything over 40 wont work. Doesnt boot off the firmware on the 80g drive, which is what it should do only boots from the int firmware. I ordered a smaller drive so we will see!!

One other point the whole deal here is to get the fax option to work. The print /copy seems to be ok with a 80g drive

On some of these older machines, you can simply partition a smaller area of the drive to simulate a 20 gig HD. Rather than format the entire 80 gigs of space, try partitioning a 20 gig section and leaving the rest unformatted. Some machines will be fooled into believing it is a smaller drive.

that makes sense...so do you format it on a computer?

Have you tried to access the printer through the web interface to see if you can setup fax from there? I have seen on a 4345 that if the country or timezone was not selected there was no option to fax, maybe this info is stored on the old HDD. Also did you do a disk initization on the new HDD?

For making it think its only a 20gig I would think you will need to partition it on a computer down to a 20gig or so size and leave the rest of the space as unpartitioned so it does not think its any kind of partition. Once you have the partition setup put it back in the printer and do a disk initization to it.

I just put in a 80gig HDD into a 4100mfp. Pulled the bad HDD off of the I/O card and put the new one on. Than did a disk Init to it took a good while to formart the full drive but it worked in the end. They didn't have fax setup so not sure on that.

Well the thing works!!!! It brought tears to my eyes!!!! Thanks to Heather at TSA World for her awesome input, she paid me for that, and all the others. I ended up with 1/ new firmware mod (TSA) 2/ refurb formatter board (TSA) 3/ correct size of hard drive (40g) (Toronto)(didnt know TSA)

The firmware would not update and so a new module, the max with a FaxOption installed is a 40g hard drive and we also had a bad formatter board.

So I am happy, the customer is happy ...now to get them to pay!!

You're welcome. I got to learn new stuff with you too. I didn't know you had to have a smaller than 40G hard drive. As far as I know, there is no way to partition the HP hard drives. Glad everything worked out for you. I go by prntrfxr on this forum, though.
