How to separate tray 3 unit on lj4050

While I was working on lj4050 I caused the pickup spring and pickup spring clip to come loose on tray 2. At the risk of sounding foolish I it is difficult to put these back while tray 2 + tray 3 remain together and appears a lot easier to do if separated. I am not sure how to do that. Do I have to turn over machine + remove modular plate for tray 3 then gear train assm then module side rails + then tray 2 modular plate. I was hoping the machine would just lift off of tray 3 unit but wasn't happening. Thanks for humoring me. Frank/ActionPhotocopy

I am not sure what is holding your together, but they do stack. I do not recall them being screwed together.

That's what I thought but i was unable to pull apart between tray 2 base and tray 3. I thought that i remembered tray 3 as an option and that the machine just fit right over tray 3 unit and could be easily lifted. Maybe the 4000 was like that and maybe the 4050 came standard with 2 casettes hwich were locked together somehow.Frank

If its a TN model they're screwed together. A little time consuming. Kinda difficult to put in a post without being in front of a machine and not having to do it that often.

Hi Brian. It IS a 4050tn. Could you tell me where the screws are? I have 4050 manual but in the disasssmbly/removal section all i saw was taking apart unit as I described above taking off modular plates and gear unit etc. Is that what you are referring to or is it easier? Frank

You have to split the machine in half. Start by removing the 2 very long tray 1 p/u asm screws, remove screw on the left side under the fan, remove the formatter, disconnect the purple cable from the lower portion (under where formatter was) and lift printer straight up. Then the lower unit can be accessed from the top. If you remove the screws that connect only tray 2 to tray 3 you shouldn't have to remove the metal plate and rails of tray 2 to reach tray 3. Hope this helps you.

I'm glad he explained that one and not me. I would've needed the machine in front of me. It helps when you do it regularly. Good explanation prntrfxr!

Actually the instruction would separate upper part of machine from 2 trays which still leaves trays together. I wanted to split trays 2 + 3 so I could have room to reinstall pickup clip and spring.
I was able to manage it without separating trays so all is well. Thank to all for your help. Frank

It's ok, I'm used to it. I just kind of ignore it and go on.

Thanks again Lori. Your instructions were very step by step informative but somehow when i got down to removing formatter and disconnecting cable I was still having a problem. I can't exactly remember as it has been 3 months. So instead of trying to go further with disassembly I made a serious effort to install clip and spring without further disassembly and managed to do that.
I probably missed something in your instruction. I have been in the business since 1968 but spent the greatest part of those years in office and started servicing machines myself on a regular basis in mid 2007. I had picked up things along the way and dabbled in service from time to time over the years when necessary. Without places like Copytech.net and talented and helpful techs like yourself I would have had to do something else. Frank
