If it is an mfp, it should have the adf section. The power supply in the adf that powers the adf, also powers the control panel. If it is the other 4100 (regular laserjet that doesn't have adf attached), check to make sure firmware DIMM is in the correct spot, firmware DIMM is bad, memory is bad, formatter is bad(bad formatters are a weakness on this machine) or the engine board.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

I also have this problem on a 4101 MFP. It will print when you send it a print job, but the display is blank, no fan on the scan unit, and when you turn it on and look through the holes in the back of the cover for the scan unit, the led's flicker but go blank when you first turn it on. I think the power supply in the scan unit is dead. I read the outputs and only got 5 volts DC on one pin. It's too late to call my regular supplier, but I saw it on Amazon for $900+ and refurbed at Code Micro for $300+ it's a power supply #RG1-4175-000CN.

I wonder if it's time to suggest an upgrade?

Exactly... You may be able to find a refurbished power supply cheaper, but they are kind of rare. For those who may not know. The power supply is not the printer power supply, but the ADF power supply. At the time I posted my reply to this question, I didn't know the answer. We live we learn. We've discontinued selling it, since it is so hard to find.

Hi There. I also have this HP 4100mfp. The best solution for this situation is to configure an IP address for it (im assuming it has a LAN network port) Im not sure what the default IP address is, you can google that. When you have the ip address, connect you computer directly to it and the use a web page to manage it. The beauty of the software on this machine is that you can do everything plus more without the display showing. It even shows you what the display screen will be showing - you can pause continue jobs. I am attaching a pic from mine.

              Hope this helps.

That's a good idea, but the customer is a church and needed a machine that anyone could walk up to and use like a photocopier.

                Thanks for the tip.
