    HP 9000

i have a HP LJ 9000 with a 3k finisher. when directing paper to the finisher, it still turns and goes to the inside. after two sheets, it shows a jam. i know this is because its not going to the finisher. do i need to replace the entire diverter section or could something else be causing the paper not to turn. i see there are a couple of plungers on the diverter that are activated (or supposed to be) in the process. anyway to test these? i'm a copier tech by trade and dont know a whole lot about HP, but being forced to learn without resources.

    thanks!

if you have the part number for the diverter that would be great as well.

Need more info about what it is doing and what you've tried. When you print a configuration page, is it showing the finisher under trays and options? If not, the printer is not recognizing the finisher. Make sure the finisher is connected properly to the printer (that someone hasn't messed with the cable and connected it backward). Disconnect and reconnect it. Make sure the finisher is plugged into the outlet on both ends. Does the finisher power up and go through the motions during warm up?

I have not printed a configuration page. i have checked power cables, the finisher does go thru some cycling when machine is powered up.

what is happening, if the customer prints normal, the paper goes to the tray on the 9000. when we tell it to staple or just stack on the finisher (the option is there in the print driver, i know that doesnt mean much), the paper still goes to the tray on the finisher, shows jam in finisher after 2 sheets. like it knows its supposed to be going to the finisher but the finisher doesnt ever get it. so i'm not sure if the diverter is messed up or something else. when the finisher is disconnected, it runs like a champ.

the customer said it worked fine, then just quit. i know they have been using it for awhile. not sure why it would quit all of a sudden.

any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated!

ok...Usually on a stapler/stacker the paper can go to 1 of 2 places when it gets to the finisher. It goes to the top tray if you are printing regular or it pulls the paper back into the finisher, turns it, staples it, and then it goes into the bottom tray. If you have a problem with the flipper assembly it will go occasionally to the top tray and never to the second tray. That could be your problem. Do make sure that it is listed on the configuration page and do print tests from the control panel not the pc. You want to rule out driver problems or other communication problems first before you work on the printer. After you verify that the finisher is being seen by the printer (likely from what you've told me it is), then run diagnostic test pages directing the printer to staple pages and send it to bin 1 and bin 2. Troubleshoot your problems from there. The flipper asm is easy to replace once you get the covers off the finisher, if that is your problem.
