    HP 8000 error 79.00 FE

Customer gets the 79.00 FE error when printing. It seems to be only when printing PDF's. Clearing the print queue and doing a cold reset will clear the code but the problem keeps returning. I've replaced the formatter board. I tried to do a firmware upgrade but I can't seem to find the setup menu to put the machine into update mode. Is there a print driver that works better than others? If i remember they are using the PCL6 driver.

Use the PCL 5 than postscript in that order. If the Jet direct card is a 615n you may want to bake it at 375 degrees for 8 mins.
I have fixed this problem before by removing the jetdirect 615n removingthe plastic end piece from the jetdirect and baking it.
    But try the drivers first.

There is a recall notice on the 615 Network card. Contact HP. This was a while ago though. They may not replace it now.

Paul I think that ran out over a year ago.

After revisiting this morning i found they were using PCL5. The only ones having the problem were windows 7 machines. I deleted the printer and re-installed the drivers locally using PCL6. We'll see how long this lasts. It seems the machine with the most problems prints Staples website pages often. After I finished it printed correctly.

This machine has been in place since at least '06, they said they bought it new. The manufacture date was Jan '99. I'd hope any problems with the jetdirect card would have shown itself before now.

Win 7 does change things. I have found that PCL 6 works better with win 7.
If it is a Jetdirect 615n it can still go bad.

It would probably be a good idea to check and see if there is a firmware upgrade for the machine too
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".
