HP 4730 colour registration generic toner

One of our engineers, who works on HPs a lot, says that he has had a similar problem on a number of occasions and has put a genuine cartridge in, which seems to reset the machine in some way, then the generic cartridge can be refitted and used as normal.

Could anyone suggest what might be happening with these generic cartridges?

When you had generics in there, were they all from the same manufacturer or were you mixing OEM or with different vendors? Did you try calibrating the printer?

It also might have something to do with who the manufacturer of the generic cartridges came from.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

Im looking into this for another engineer but from the info that he gave me,all the cartridges(generic) were from the same company. Full calibration, colour misregistration sensors cleaned and transfer belt replaced. I expect that the company that make the toner will say if it works in one machine and not another then its not the toner. I know HP will just blame the generic toner. Im thinking that the density maybe just a little less on the generics causing the sensors to not set up the registration . Maybe the oem cartridge was enough to bring it back in but next time it does a calibration it may go out again.

This is why HP always advise us to use OEM toner to avoid this kind of problem.

The generic cartridges are false economy, they are like cheap toilet rolls, you may see that you have 8 for what you pay for a good brand, but in the end they still don't last as long, anyway the question....
I suspect the toner from the generic cartridges has a different reflective value, so when the machine layers patches onto the the belt for line registration, the ID sensors that read the patches cant read them correctly thus producing colour registration errors!
