HP CM3530 ADF pickup roller often won't move down

On my HP CM3530, the ADF pickup roller often won't move down when it tries to pickup a sheet and then it gives an error. If I retry it a few times it normally works after a few times. Is there something I can clean/lubricate to get this issue resolved or do I need to replace a part?

This isn't a major problem as I barely use the ADF once a year but if it's an easy fix I'd like to try.

    Thanks

      What is the error?

That's perfect timing as I just had to use the ADF again just now.

Of course it still gave the error so I was able to note it, it's (as you would expect):

        "Document feeder pick error"

It then asks to open the ADF cover and then gives instruction on clearing the paper, but since no paper ever got picked up there's none to clear.

As usual the 2nd to 4th attempt ends up working. The issue is that the pickup roller doesn't physically move down to grab the paper as it should, it's clearly a mechanical issue in the pickup mechanism but I don't know if can be fixed with cleaning a part or if I need to replace a part and if so what part.

        Thanks

Thanks, but that seems to be the entire ADF lid and over $400.

There are many "cartridge-type" parts in the ADF, including the set of rollers that often won't move down, wouldn't just replacing that "roller cartridge" solve it?

It's not obvious to see what's wrong as I have the machine on a very high piece of furniture and I need to get up on a chair to view inside the ADF (I will be getting a better desk for it soon).

            Thanks

The service manual doesn't go into much detail that I can see when it comes to the ADF. There is no parts breakdown of the unit so I can't fully see how it is design mechanically. Basically you can buy the feed rollers or the entire ADF. So if something is broken your probably gonna have the replace the whole thing. If your lucky there is a dirty sensor somewhere that is working half hazardly. A particular sensor might be needed to trigger before the machine will allow the operation of the motor that lowers the pickup roller. Look for sensors and clean them out with canned air, you may have to take some covers off. Also there will be a control board somewhere that you could check and reseat all the connectors for the motors and such. There also might be a one-way gear and clutch that drives the shaft that lowers the pickup roller. Taking the one-way or clutch off and cleaning it might be needed if it is slipping occasionally. I'm just giving blind advice from general knowledge.

The ADF contains the following sensors:
              1. ADF-cover sensor. Detects whether the ADF cover is open or closed.
              2. Top-of-page sensor. Detects the top of the page before sending a page through the ADF and the
end of the page after feeding/scanning is complete.
              3. Paper-present sensor. Detects whether a document is present in the ADF. If paper is present in
the ADF when copies are made, the product scans the document using the ADF. If no paper is
present when copies are made, the product scans the document using the scanner glass.
