[Misc] 4100mfp doesn't see paper loaded in adf

this is my second 4100mfp that doesn't sense paper loaded in the adf.
if i turn the printer off and then back on, it will sense the paper for a while and work properly but eventually it will not sense the paper in the adf until another power cycle.

    any ideas.

Have you done anything to resolve the problem? Did you change the sensor that detects paper in the ADF?

trying to recall what i did on the 1st machine when this happened.
actually i think i changed out the entire scanner and there was no change.
any idea where the scanner electronics feeds into, in the main part of the printer.

i am trying to remember to shut it off at night since i don't use the fax anymore.
hopefully that will reduce the amount of time during the day when it is nonoperational.

The bottom of that machine has a formatter, and a dc controller. The dc controller is just what the name implies. It is a switch, turning on and off the current to the motors and sensors. The formatter does all of the creative thinking. If you changed the scanner, I would swap boards with a working one. You may also have a pinched wire in the harness.

i looked in the repair manual for the first time in a long time and apparently all the control signals for the scanner come from the copier processor board.
there are led status lights on the back of the unit for that board and i will have to look at them and hope they give some guidance as to what is malfunctioning.
the repair manual has troubleshooting steps based on the status of the leds.
mostly it says to double check the internal connector cable and to reseat the dimms on that board and of course if all else fails get a new board.

thanks for the references to the formatter and the dc controller and i will review the repair manual to get their relation to the scanner operation.

Not that this is your problem, but just an FYI, these machines have a weakness in the adf power supply (separate from the machine engine board) and the 4100's in general have a weakness in the formatter. For your problem the sequence should be: sensor flag > sensor > cable > scanner cntrl > engine board (machine). The adf power supply may or may not have a role. I'm not sure, because it's not a machine you run into often in field.

SM would have what controls what.

Yeah, as you thought, it was not the copier processor board.

i noticed in the circuit description that the scanner power supply board has resettable links so something is tripping it and a power recycle is needed to reset the link..
but i don't know if the scanner is drawing too much current or the printer power supply is sending too much voltage or if the links are failing on the scanner power board and are tripping too soon.

i also noticed that the entire scanner/copier is dead when the adf doesn't work but the printer itself works fine.
wouldn't that rule out the formatter board.

what would you suggest i try next.

                thanks

You should revisit prntrfxr post and follow her steps. She really knows what she is talking about. She started you at one end and walked you back step by step.
