    HP LJ8100N, error code 58.1

    HP LJ8100N, error code 58.1

Perhaps I'm too stupid to read the tech manual but I cannot find an explanation what error code 58.1 means with a LJ8100N.

The code pops up from time to time during large print sessions. Machine has 2.6 million on the clock

I haven't ran into this but the Service manual says:

    58.x
    PRINTER ERROR
    alternates with
    CYCLE POWER TO
    CONTINUE
Error A temporary printing error occurred.
    X Description
    1 Tray 1 lifter malfunction.
    X Tray X lifter malfunction.
Turn the printer off, and then turn
    the printer on.

Quick googling says it's probably a tray 1 pickup assembly. If I read this correct the part # for this is: RG5-4330-000CN

If I read this service manual description, I would replace the Tray 1 P/U asm.

(Coincidently, the lifting issues with these units are common. I've seen the following component parts of this assembly cause this problem: The flapper solenoid, the sensor pcb board, broken or out of place flag, and/or deformity of gears and cams due to age. If you wanted to fix this issue without replacing the entire part, # RG5-4330, I would start by removing the felt and glue that adheres it to the flapper of the solenoid. Anything more than that and you're better off purchasing a replacement p/u asm from a reputable vendor.)
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

I managed to "rebuild" the take up assy.

The new take up assy unit which I got was wrong so I took the old one and cleaned the clutch with brake cleaner, cleaned the optical sensors, replaced the foam pads of the solenoid and replaced the take up roller and separation pad. I made around 350 test prints and the error 58.1 did not come back.

Thanks for your assistance guys and gal.
