    HP CLJ2605dn

    Hi,

I have an HP Colour LaserJet 2605dn printer that has started power cycling after showing "79 Error" and occasionally "49 Error". I have upgraded to the latest firmware and have tried resetting the NVRAM and the Super NVRAM procedure. However I have noticed that if I power down the printer for a few hours I can print a few pages (up to 10) without any errors. After being powered up for a while it will error out and power cycle. I have read many articles on "79 Error" and it is likely a formatter problem. However I was wondering if it can still be a formatter problem if I can print a few pages after cool down, and if it might be a power supply issue instead?

    Thanks,

here's an idea,Disconnect the network cable, or USB cable (depending on how you connect) ... then power off the printer ... wait at least 20 seconds ... then power back on. If the printer comes up to Ready (and stays that way) without being connected to network or to your computer, then you know the problem is probably a bad/faulty print job and you can check for print jobs still lingering in the computer trying to print.

85% of these errors are communication related. Make sure the print queue is clear, update drivers, update firmware, and try connecting via another network cable/port, as this problem can also be caused by faulty/damaged cable or bad port. A lot of these problems are due to an interruption in data transmission resulting in loss of packets or corrupt data, network setup related, or a change in network settings. software, or system software conflicts with drivers.

In rare cases it can be caused by a faulty network card (or network enabled formatter) in the printer, but and there are no known issues with this machine. (For example, P3005, P2015, or 4100 series have known problems). Firmware and memory can also contribute but once again these issues are rarely ever printer related.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions. I'm going to try a different router and cabling to the network to see if it improves things. Cheaper than purchasing a formatter...

I'll report back on how it works out.

              Thanks,

I had the same problem, I fixed it with my soldering-iron. I replaced the 220uf capacitor on the processor/interface board, it's ESR value was about 0.17. A new Capacitor is about 0.05. I added 2 additional Caps. The Capacitors on the Power-supply-board still looked good.

Wow! Thanks for the tip RaBe59. Actually I managed to source a used formatter board a month ago and finally got to install it today. The printer has been powered on for almost an hour and no power cycling yet. So far so good....

However, I never realized that the ESR value is such a good tool for finding bad capacitors, and I love the fact that you can check the caps onboard. I must add one of these to my test equipment. Can you suggest a good one?

Back to the formatter board.... I see the 220uF cap. It is surface mount. Were you able to find an exact replacement? What is the rated voltage of the cap? I wouldn't mind repairing my original formatter board and testing it to keep as a spare. You mentioned you added a couple more caps. Do you mean in parallel to the 220uF one, or did you replace some others?

With the replacement formatter board the web interface now reports a different serial number for the printer (I imagine the page count is wrong as well). Is there anyway to change the serial number back to the old one? It doesn't really matter, but I'm just curious.

Glad I came back after almost 4 months to see if there was any activity. I don't remember getting the email indicating the new post. This forum is awesome for help.

                    Thank you!

I used standard single ended low ESR capacitors 220uF/16V. There is plenty of space on the board so there is no need to use surface mount subminiatures. There are four other locations with soldering pads for capacitors shown on the component placement imprint. I think these capacitors where planed to reduce the noise on the supply voltage, but the circuit worked also without those caps, so they could save some cents.

My ESR-meter was an assembly kit by ELV .
