The drum has a chip and collects waste. Replace the chip and also empty the waste toner.

You take out the toner cartridge and shake it very hard for about a minute and then put it back in...duh!

Find out which toner is out and replace it. Should be able to do that on the control panel (supplies status). Shaking the toner will not make any difference. If it is a new toner cartridge, then the chip on the toner has not been replaced.

It's easier to replace the drum than change the chip and empty waste toner. If he doesn't know to change the drum, the damage he does changing the chip and waste toner should be sufficient to teach him to change the drum next time.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".
