    HP Colorlaser 3500 Tray error

I have a customer that has an HP 3500. The printer continues to say the tray is empty or open. The tray closes and there is nothing blocking the contacts on the right side. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Which tray 1 or 2?
If tray 2, did you change the p/u roller recently?

Flag is front center under printer base. It's set up like the 2200/2300 printers and the flag can be out of position. Check that the paper tray guides are set correctly. Additionally, when you push the paper down in the tray (front) it should stay down. There are 2 little plastic pieces on either side of the tray that should lift the paper up when you push on top of them. If there is a problem with the tray it can cause this problem. Once you've checked that follow the troubleshooting steps below (x=1, tray 1 or x=2, tray 2):

    1. Check tray sensor lever.
    2. Connector tray X detection- flag trips sensor (not paper size sensor)
    3. Check connector for damage back to DC controller.
    4. Replace tray X paper sensor.
    5. Defective DC controller.

    hope this helps.
