    Designjet 500 86:01 error

This machine recently had a new belt put on. The encoder strip is clean and nice--everything looks perfect. When turned on, the carriage jolts a little, then throws the code. If I drag the carriage to the middle, if moves a tiny bit one way, then the other way, then throws the code. If I run a carriage movement test, it does the same thing.

I'm thinking a new carriage--maybe the encoder sensor is bad?

Oh--the trailing cables, on both ends of the connectors, look good.

Am I thinking right about this?

    Thanks.

Are you sure the encoder strip is installed correctly? With the transparent part up?

Are you sure the encoder strip is good? I've seen a lot of them on 500/800s where there's large clear spots rubbed through the encoder marks. Since it does it regardless of the carriage position, it's probably not this.

It's hard to get wrong, but is it threaded through the carriage correctly?

Is the tiny ribbon cable to the encoder seated corrected?

If all this is OK, I'd probably suspect the encoder/carriage.
