    HP m425dn adf problems

I have had a few of these units come in for repair and can't figure it out for the life of me. The adf will recognize the original but when I try to copy it just sits there for a while then reads a jam, or it will try to pull the paper and chug it in about half way then read a jam. Has anyone had this issue and if so do you know of a fix? Thanks in advance.

HP LaserJet Pro MFP 425, HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521, HP LaserJet Pro Color MFP M570 Series Products - Troubleshooting ADF Hardware Issues

    Introduction

This document describes specific ADF related hardware issues, the root cause and solutions to resolve the problems.
    top

    ADF Mispick

    Problem Description
Device display shows Document Feeder Mispick, Reload.
    Possible Causes
    • The paper getting loaded into the ADF might be damaged.
    • Curled or wavy media.
    • The pickup roller could be contaminated.
    • There could be a mechanical problem with the ADF such as a sensor or a damaged cable or dislodged gear.

    Solution
    • If the original had been folded or previously stapled, smooth out the folds as much as possible and fan the pages apart where the staple was.
    • Curled or wavy media has an increased chance of experiencing mispick errors. See <Figure 1> .
Figure 1: Wavy media that has a distinct wave shape like an 'M' will have a valley which makes it difficult for the pickup roller to reach the media
      • Turn the media around and copy the trailing edge first.
      • Allow the media to flatten out and cool down (if just printed).
      • Try switching to different media with a lower fill content.

    • Clean the pickup rollers: Take a clean cloth or paper towel moistened with water, lightly hold the white gear to the right of the pickup roller with one hand (to prevent the pickup roller from turning while cleaning) and use the other hand, in a left/right motion, to wipe clean the pickup roller. Turn the white gear to move to a different spot on the roller, wipe clean, and repeat until the entire pickup roller is clean. Perform the same procedure on the other roller. <See Figures 2 & 3>
Figure 2: Location of Pickup Rollers and gears

Figure 3: Clean entire surface area of both Pickup Rollers
    • Open the jam cover and inspect the paper presence sensor flag is in the correct UP position. If the paper presence sensor flag is stuck in the down position, the ADF will continue attempting to pick after all of the paper has run through the ADF. After 3 tries of picking no paper, the control panel will display Document feeder mispick, Reload . <See Figure 4> Tap the separation floor to release the sensor flag. If the flag continues to get stuck, replace the ADF Unit according to the CSR Table .
Figure 4: ADF paper presence flag shown in the stuck 'down position' and correct 'up position'
    • Power cycle the unit and verify that the separation floor is down when it starts and the pickup roller spins when it attempts to pick. <See Figure 5> If the separation floor is in the incorrect 'up position,' it can be manually depressed to the 'down position.' When stuck in the 'up position,' the unit may also indicate that a document is not loaded when it actually is. If the issue persists, replace the ADF Unit according to the CSR Table .
Figure 5: Separation Floor shown in the stuck 'up position' and correct 'down position'

NOTE: On early manufactured units, the e-clip that holds the swing gear can slip off and the ADF lift plate will not automatically return to the down position. Manufacturing has improved the design and the e-clip can no longer come off the newest production units.
    • If the issue persists, replace the ADF Unit according to the CSR Table .

    ADF Door Open Message

    Problem Description
Device constantly displays ADF door is open.
    Possible Causes
    • ADF door might not be completely shut.
    • ADF door sensor might be obstructed or faulty.

    Solution
    • Make sure the ADF lid is completely closed.
    • If issue is still present after the above steps, replace the ADF Unit according to the CSR Table .

    Paper Jam In ADF

    Problem Description
Device displays Remove paper from document feeder. Press OK to continue.
    Possible Causes
    • Physical paper jammed in the ADF.
    • Debris jammed in ADF (Ex.: paper clip, staple, etc.)
    • Something mechanical has gone wrong with the ADF such as a sensor wire loose or roller dislodged, replace the ADF unit.

    Solution
    • Power cycle the device.
    • Open the ADF jam cover and look for loose debris in the paper path. The paper path can be 'flossed' with a business card (or similar) to remove any unseen debris. <See Figure 6>
Figure 6: Slide a business card up and down and across the entire length of the paper path

Device does not detect document in ADF

    Problem Description
Device display shows Ready status, but a document is physically loaded.
    Possible Causes
    • Media is not correctly inserted.
    • Photo sensor in the ADF assembly is damaged.

    Solution
    • Flatten out all folds and curl and make sure the stack is no taller than 10mm(12/32nds of inch) so you can insert the stack to the front of the orange pad.
    • If issue is still present after the above steps the sensor is likely damaged, replace the ADF Unit according to the CSR Table .

    top

Device displays "document loaded" message at all times

    Problem Description
Device display shows Document Loaded status, but there are no documents present on the feeder or flatbed.
    Possible Causes
    • The ADF door open flag is up.
    • The ADF photo sensor is damaged.

    Solution
    • Disconnect the ADF from the flatbed, and perform a power cycle, after powering back up, reconnect the ADF and check status [If unit does not have connection through the flatbed, skip this step].
    • If issue is still present after the above steps the sensor is likely damaged, replace the ADF Unit according to the CSR Table .

      Re: HP m425dn adf problems

That's what I was afraid of. I have been able to repair a few of them by reattaching the timing disk that had come unglued from the timing gear but it is a pain in the butt to get to. I destroyed two adf's just figuring out how to take them apart. I will continue to try and figure this out and post the fix here if possible. I have a few salvage units left and receive a few a week. Thank you for your help.
