If something like this is causing you fits, there is a sensor feeler just past the fuser that has a rubber pad on it that wears out and causes the feeler to get hung up. Clean the pad off of the feeler and you should be good to go.
I've got a picture of where that is at, but for some reason I can't upload it right now. My fault, sorry about that.
Still, if you remove the finisher and the bridge unit (sorry, Ricoh terminology) the sensor feeler should be easy to spot, and if you manually move the feeler around and it sticks in the upper position you have found the culprit.
