OK, I'll stand by my assertion that Lexmark makes some of the poorest quality devices I've ever seen. Nonetheless, I spend an incredible amount of time having to work on them, well that's probably why. Anyway....In changing the motor of an E460 (and please note the service manual is dead wrong by telling you to remove the "left side toner guide" when it should read "left side cover") you have to disconnect the linkage from the door; this linkage is what pushes in/out the plungers (for want of a better word) to the toner cartridge. removing the linkage is touchy, snap it out without breaking anything. My question is whether there's a field trick to re-install it???? I spend more time doing this than actually replacing the motor. The linkage has 2 tabs, the connecting hole on the door just 1. *Sometimes* I get the piece back in OK; more often than not I crack or break the (cheap) plastic at the hole. Was this installed in the factory with the door removed and angled a weird way you simply cannot do with the door in place? I haven't tried putting some lube on the peg, would that help? Does anyone have a trick to get this re-installed cleanly. There's nothing in the service manual about it. For removal it simply states, "disconnect the linkage."
I think a cool field mod would be to Dremel off the tabs on the linkage, drill a small hole through it, and use a hitch pin to keep it in place. Clean, easy to remove and replace without damaging the otherwise fragile/cheap plastic that these things need.
OK, ranting off. Any thoughts appreciated....
