My company just entered the Lexmark printer arena. We are a larger company and service Toshiba, Kyocera, Muratec and Oki. I have not started any training,but have 20 years in the business. I have a T644 that is making a loud "broken gear" type noise. It sounds terrible but it actually makes a good copy without any codes or jams. On other brands I would suspect the fuser. I noticed that the exit assembly area does not turn smoothly.It jerks and pops like the drive gears are screwed up. But it makes prints properly. Before I tear into this, does anyone have any input? I noticed that if I open the back cover, the latge grey "paper guide section has a couple small cracks..I wont be a rookie on these for long, but right now, I think I ned some guidance. I have a parts book, but dont want to order too much or too little..thanks guys

these machines have a vertical drive shaft/gear in the front left that drives optional trays when installed. if the gear breaks it will make a loud popping noiseComment

The large plate you spoke of is the redrive assembly.
If it is cracked replace it.
It will cause problems in the future.
Silvertoast is talking about the beveled gear. Look in the manual how to access this. If it is a full round gear it is fine.
If it has a chunk of the gear missing or the teeth are bad replace it.
Both of these repairs a simple but get the full manual first.
