Revoked Posting / Commenting Privileges for Red Cards

Not sure if this is something that is possible with the vBulletin software, but maybe implementing some sort of posting approval system where if an account has more than say, 5 red cards, any posts and or comments would require admin / moderator approval before actually being posted. Granted with the lack of over site, that could be a very long time, but it would certainly clear up the SPAM in this place. It seems that just about everyone jumps on the reputation bandwagon for the junk posts, so the junk accounts would have their posting privileges revoked rather quickly and then we wouldn't have to see the garbage from the couple idiots that keep squeezing in here some how.

    Just a thought...

My Ricoh knowledge is slowly dwindling away at this point. Many things have been lost to time...

Re: Revoked Posting / Commenting Privileges for Red Cards

Sometimes I get irritated with the spammers and such but overall I have to give this site props for the way it conducts itself. People who add no value don't seem to last long around here. They just get ignored and go away. Mostly.

Also, considering that we have no moderators, the board does a great job of self moderating. Maybe that's best??!!

Re: Revoked Posting / Commenting Privileges for Red Cards

The problems with basing it on Red Cards is that it might not be that equitable and it will not solve the spam bot problem, they will merely create a new account. As for being equitable, someone relative new such as you with a Rep Power, Reputation Power, of 62 may only give one red card at a time whereas some of us old fart such as me currently with 827 or say sandmanmac or blackcat can give 4 or 5 with each time we tag someone. You get Rep Power from years of helping others and earning green cards. The black triangle next to the star for giving red and green cards is for reporting posts for spam, advertising links and other major violations of the Forum Rules.

I hope that Aneurysm will start being here more often. He was here about a month ago and spent a number of hours remove spam and bogus users. He was in again 2 days ago and was checking the indexing. Possibly from the outage that had occurred.

Tim I don't think femaster is relative new arround here, In fact if the quality of posts was to be accounted he should have double or even triple reputation.
I know he posts mainly in KM forum where you are not so often but trust me I've read every one of them and for me he is prooven enough for spelling, learning, helpful, knowledge and reputation.

Okay I admit I did not look at his join date and was going more on the first time I saw him post here in Site Feedback. But the portion about Rep Power still is accurate.

I kinda like that idea. Site is somehow self moderating as Billy mentioned mainly due to quality and responsibility of large group of core members being here enough to care for this place and each other 🙂
Still some simple rules can be used for community convenience and regulations and reduction of spammers and such creatures.
This way guys with great reputation (obviously not for nothing) can act like gate keepers. I can imagine those members will receive help from other members and chain effect can reduce illegal activity and spam.

            Just saying.

The problem is that Just members like you, me and a number of others who are here every day can do nothing about spammers other than replying to their spam with warning messages. I don't even click on their links anymore as I have found out that they most likely get paid for every visit they generate. Only Aneurysm can currently see server logs and determine where the spammers are by IP address and possibly by MAC. With that information he can notify the watchdog sites and add them the the list of automatically blocked spammers. I don't know what a Moderator can do other than maybe delete the contents of offensive posts, possibly be able to take green cards away and hopefully have a way to contact Aneurysm directly to report individuals and threads.

Maybe that's available in administration settings on vBulletin maybe not I don't know still it's good idea for Aneurysm to consider.

                  This.

Ive moderated and admined several large BMW sites...and now create and admin several private VBulletin forums... the absolute KEY to a health forum is where the members themselves- NOT MODS- can impart a sense of right and wrong. Immediate feedback. Mods only needed when it gets bad

Maybe it's time to kill all the spam by banning links in the forum. Yeah, it will be a pain but if it clears out the garbage turning the site into a useless resource I'll take the inconvenience.

A couple of reasons why I don't think that would work:
                        1. It would kill a number of useful forums
                        2. The spam bots would find a way around it

Have you noticed that contributions are only 55% and it is the last day of the month. Maybe that will get Aneurysm's attention.

                          I take the 5th.

Y'all keep coming up with ideas, though. Something needs to change.

Why could there be no 2fa in place? 2fa has stopped a huge amount of spammers from bombing forums.

Just wrote it on another topic but adding a simple QA captcha on the registration form with a technical "copy-tech" question can do the trick.
