We have all at some stage had problems with machines scanning to email or sending notifications when Exchange is involved. More than a question post, this more of a how to post.
Most SMTP problems could be gotten around by using a whitelist in Exchange 2003, but not 2007 and 2010 are slightly different. The attached document describes how to add a Receive Connector in Exchange which allows for un-authenticated SMTP Relaying. The good thing about this though is that the SMTP Relay Connector is locked down to just certain IP addresses which would be your devices and not the PC's which helps IT people say yes.
Anyway, hope this helps.
