    *&% you Ricoh engineers! (rant)

installing a fax board in an mp2501 shouldn't be THIS difficult!? first one i've done, and the 42 screws & 'move the main board to the left' (when they give you 1mm) is ridiculous! I realize this is a base/entry level machine, and corners are cut everywhere to save ca$h - but you couldn't make a slide in fax option, with an accessible Controller?? OK, i feel better now and won't go all De-Fens on my 2501's.

I can top that. A Muratec f-112 needed a new feed roller and sep pad. To change the roller, all covers off, remove boards and enter the gear pack to remove the gear on the end of the roller so you can remove the shaft to get the roller off.

Genius at work! This engineer gets the award for the most labor required to change a frick'n feed tire, closely followed by all Konica Minolta products. =^..^=

Back in the early 90s, I serviced tons of Canon fax machines.

The L700 series were the first to be plain paper laser models.

For most intents and purposes, they were rock solid.

However, when the laser went bad (usually the motor croaked), it was a 2 hour and 1 minute project to replace: 1 hour to tear it down, 1 minute to replace the part, and another hour to reassemle.

It was like the entire machine was built around the laser.

I had one of those L777's at an airport. The laser was making a shrieking noise for nearly 3 months before it coded out. The traffic controllers all just assumed that it was a jet aircraft landing. =^..^=

If I remember right, you had to remove 38+ screws to get to that lazer unit. Then put them all back in.

All without having too many parts left over.

That is why they are called "pocket screws".

Reminds me of the panasonic UF8000/7000. To do anything with the fuser, all covers, the adf assy and this and that. about 1 hour and this machine is currently in the field. they are great fax machines, except for replacing those fusers. replaced one and one of the spring on the separation fingers was dislodged and had to do the whole teardown again. now i found a way to make sure it prints a few pages, even with the adf scanner off before reinstall. Now it is a routine repair with no left over screws.

                      It really makes you wonder.

Manufacturers (like older Kyocera) CAN make "one screw" drums, fusers, feed units, developer if they wanted.

You'd think that would be the starting point. And if they want to improve on the parts or build faster processors and cooler OPs panel go right ahead.

BUT LEAVE THE DAMN DESIGN ALONE

This is the reason also, i will not do this job without a decent 12v cordless drill/driver. Removing all those screws manually i guess are for the young guys with strong arms. Me i keep my porter cable drill/driver close to me and have mastered its use. really feel for the guys who have to do teardown manually.

I am guessing that for some techs, 38 screws come out, and about 19 or 20 go back in.

While we are bitching about design, how about the laser in a Bizhub? The wires and ribbons are attached to the laser, so you must snake them through the machine to the board. About 25 to 30 snap clamps.

IF that many go back in.
