    Re: Do you agree?

The traveling around and not being stuck in an office or shop part is good. My problem is that I just don't care anymore. Sadly, I'm over 60 without a lot of options besides to keep going.
I know I should be ashamed of myself. Strangely though, I am not.

Sounds like your just run down,or feel like your not appreciate at work. May be a change of diet or a good dose of Vitamins(B) & Minerals will help ease the brain fog an improve self esteem.

Seriously... You prefer doing repetition on a factory chain ???? Wow... I did factory chain work as a youth.
I absolutely loathed every day start to finish. I knew from day one on the factory floor that my talents where required else were.

I appreciate your humility on the topic though...

Love what you do and you will never work a day in your life, after 30 years, still loving what I do. Like stated, the freedom, the people you meet, the places you walk into, the respect you earn, the comfortable living it brings with, well...all said and done, it's priceless.

I've been on the road as a service tech since I was 17, different location and a different challenge every few hours. Just couldn't imagine being stuck in the same office day in, day out. However now I'm over the hill and on the downhill slide towards retirement my knees do appreciate being stuck behind my desk for hours every day but the brain still demands I get out in the field for an hour or two just to give it an airing.

Also got to get out of the office or how else am I going to get all my personal stuff done during working hours?

Apart from customers, salesmen and IT wankers, yes, this is a good job!!

I am a shop tech. I have worked in the field to, but my preference is in the shop. Don't have to be in traffic jam, weather, ----customer, no ties and others. can handle outside if i have to, but like it where i am. If you like your work, then you will find a way to improve on it. with the advent of you tube and search engines, this passes my day with ease and the machines today are quick enough that you don't bite your nails waiting for it to boot. [disliked that in the past, same with computers]. kyocera has a small mfp series that just blows me away. m3560i, you can send fax and while sending fax, copy both sided and print both sided with the machine just going and no baulking. now when my orders are manageable, i can watch u tub and whatever. shop tech rocks, who say no, tell me why.
The key here is willingness to do your job, and to the best of your ability.

I read you earlier post on this thread and was taken aback for a while. I think you may have to seek professional help in getting yourself organised and in the search for a job in this field. There are work agencies that specializes in seeking out jobs for people in the Technical field and i would start by looking in the yellow pages of your phone book and make an appointment to meet one of these agents. They are trained to listen to your desires and will look at your experience and any training you have . It's you that have to make the effort and the sooner you start the better. And as tough as it is, if the pay is good where you are, don't leave untill you find what you want, then move on.

My wife likes to work retail jobs. I can't understand that at all. I've worked a few when I was younger, and I just can't imagine having to do it for any length of time. It would make for such a miserable life. But yet, she absolutely loves it. I guess we're all wired for different things. Some people like it in the field and some people don't. But if you're stuck in the field and you don't like it, you've got my sympathies. That kind of job mismatch can make life hard. You're in my prayers man.

always come in on time, give my 8 plus hours five days a week. and don't complain. its just me though, and i have never worked in a office with more than one other guy. now i work as the only tech and have no help if i get stuck on something.

From the two statements above, i don't think he really hates this type of work. I guess he has always worked alone and has no one to share in his problem/solution situations in troubleshooting ect. He said he can fix anything and has been in this type of work for a while now, otherwise his pay would not be good .
But in my suggestion to him, he has to move on and seek out what may suite him or be stuck in the same situation.
Maybe there are techs out there in similar situations, but must give him the credit to speak out to this community here, so others may know that they are not alone.

I think also, that he reads this thread and others and see techs sharing their ideas and he wants to be a part of that in his work environment. I also think he can be assured that the people here will assist him with problems and questions he may have regarding troubleshooting and others.

As a lone tech, I completely understand these 2 points. I actually like my profession most of the time, but on the days I feel I almost can't take it anymore, it is because of this.

I made some comments on your replies kei9tha. But just reading this again, the words highlighted in red above is spelled incorrect . If you want to be noticed and someone to at least consider you, you have to pay attention to your spelling as it does not seem to be consistent with someone asking for a job. A prospective employer will notice these and may not consider you. you cannot present yourself unprofessional or you will be bypassed. OR are you really serious ?.

Is is possible that you can elaborate on the highlighted quote you made above. Is it you just don't care about working in general or about working in this field. Has the job become, let's say too routine.
In a way, i kind of have a feeling like this, but mine is with the tangible and intangible world and the discerning of them.
