    Do you agree?

you know we really do have a good job. we drive around and fix copiers. not a lot of stress, not stuck in an office all day, its always something different. sometimes it can be challenging but in all its a pretty good career. I have 23 years in as a service tech and I never regret doing this. how about you?

Overall, it is the kind of employment that is as challenging as you want to make it. I would get bored with a repetitive occupation.

Let's just say that this occupation is a suitable as any could be to my particular talents. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

The part of this job i don't appreciate is the waste that is produced. from unpacking anything, from, machines to toner and parts. Also the retirement of these machines are mostly sent abroad. not in my backyard as the saying goes.

After 12 years the money is getting a bit better, there is a lot less experienced techs around because of that.
Stress used to be high and i am stuck in traffic a lot.

Yes it's better than most other 9 to 5 jobs i can get. Like drafting or machine minding.
          Whatever

It's a great job. The amazing thing is how easy 80% of the calls are. No way I'd ever watch a clock again.

I was at an office for a construction site last week. I was on the floor rebuilding a bizhub fuser. They were having a dinner for the crew so all the workers commented on how complex the teardown I was doing looked. One guy said he wouldn't want my job. I replied that he wishes he had a job like mine. Stay clean all day. Remember I am comparing this to working in a steel forge plant. Ride around in a company truck, all expenses paid. See different people all the time. People are happy to see you show up. All in all, best job I ever had.

You just made a lot of techs jealous of your endowment [ if that is the right word ]. Not to long ago, our techs were riding in hundai accents, standard and some without AC. they have since been upgraded satisfactorily. Well you have earned your remuneration as to your experience and skills and that is commendable.
But there are quite a number of techs out there waiting for the opportunity to be in your shoes and i guess they will have to demonstrate to the boss why they deserve it.
Like the rest in this thread, i enjoy the challenges as it never stops, always some bug to chase after and to discover the weak points of the new models, modifing to
exceed where the manufacturer failed . But the package has to be the real deal or no deal.

Not having to worry about my ride is a perk. A large expense I don't worry about. Might be a regional thing as every dealer in this town provides company rides. The laid back attitude at the shop is another. We show up at the shop every morning and dispatch from there. There are down sides. Not making a lot of money, but I feel my job is secure while calls are down. Best paying job I had was the one I hated the most. This would be one of the lowest paying, but less stressful.

In the companies I've worked, the other techs are generally laid back.

As an independent, things get a little stressful. For a while, when business was slow, I had to take a job at an Amazon warehouse. Once when the printer broke down, I almost went to pieces. There I was, stuck in a warehouse, instead of doing what I really liked doing. They wouldn't let me touch that printer, despite the fact that I was certified on that model. I made up my mind to do everything possible to get out of that warehouse and back on the road. I hope I never have to do that again.

I honestly thank God every day for giving me the chance to do what I enjoy for a living. Not everyone is able to do that.

                            Re: Do you agree?

I've only been in the business for about a year, but I love it so far. There's a lot to learn for me, since I came from a completely different industry, and that keeps me interested in the job. Not to mention that it's something different everyday. I have to agree with the other person that 80% or so of the calls are really easy, but it is that other 20% that drives me to find out what is going on with this new problem. Almost as if every copier has a different story, depending on end users, environment, usage and coverage, etc.

I also agree with the statement that it's really not that great of pay. I think I may have made more money as a bartender... but then you consider all the stress that I loss for coming to this job... and the benefits that come with a job like this. For me, I work at a small company that takes care of it's employees. I have great benefits and they pay for my car and gas. The car and gas alone makes it. Any other job that doesn't give me a car and pays for the gas is now going to have to at least pay me double what I'm payed now.

Anyhow, I love this industry and so thankful I got in it. Can I ask what your guys average shop size is? We have two technicians and run a fairly large area with several hundred machines. I'm curious as to what a larger company accomplishes.

I hate this job. I mean i really hate fixing office equipment. The only reason i stay and have continued to work in this field, is i find that it is true 80% of service is easy. Its just that 20% that make this a miserable job. i always come in on time, give my 8 plus hours five days a week. and don't complain. its just me though, and i have never worked in a office with more than one other guy. now i work as the only tech and have no help if i get stuck on something. i hate coming home mentally exhausted everyday. i dont want to talk or see anyone on the weekends. i just want to be left alone. i have to many years in to do something else. my pay is very good so i stay, but regret every minute i said ill take the job. i prefer to work in a factory assembling crap all day then go home and use my brain for the stuff i like to do.
