Anyone like to comment on the Ricoh buyout of IKON?

Ricoh is an easier target for me. So isn't Xerox. With Xerox just purchasing Global they are a mess - they lost all of their salesforce and service is in a world of hurt - good for me and my company. I have to believe this will have a similar affect on Ikon's outing to Ricoh.

I wonder what Canon is going to do now? No love loss for any of these corporations.

If I were Ricoh, I would see this as a great way to grab a big chunk of market share. I don't see Ikon dropping the Canon lines, just phasing out over 5 to 8 years.

I heard about it ~9:00 am today. One of my old Ikon buds noticed it on the web.

If you are a tech, you probably have nothing to worry about. They will always need the grunts. You middle managers, you can bend over. You'll be the ones to feel the cuts first. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
        5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

          What we "know"

Wish I could tell you what we've been told, but I'll wait so as to continue my employment. But if you read the articles and the press release from IKON itself you will get most of the pertinent info.

Sorry, was watching M/B at the time of this post, had to add Kari!!!

I guess the main thing that bothers me about the deal with IKON now coming under the Ricoh umbrella is, I am scared it will turn into a David vs Galith situation for our small independent Savin dealership. We can currently hold own our against IKON, but with the office turning into a Ricoh office... man I don't if we can keep up on all levels.

Fixing and selling copiers is not what I am worried about. Solutions is what I am worried about. I think we all can agree that selling and managing solutions is the future of our industry and we have really started digging in on that front. But a local Ricoh dealership would bring to the local market a level of solutions resources that our small shop will possibly not be able to compete with.

Will our company continue to prospure in our current market? YES! Will we be able to move into the larger market, where the current IKON dealer is? Possible not...

"gblase" made an interesting point though - "With Xerox just purchasing Global they are a mess - they lost all of their salesforce and service is in a world of hurt - good for me and my company. I have to believe this will have a similar affect on Ikon's outing to Ricoh." I can only hope for such to happen.

Other that, I think it's a great move my Ricoh and one that they had to make given all the movement in the industry by Xerox and others.

I agree the soloutions market is the future, and that is where Ricoh is going. I also work for a small indy Savin dealer in a city that has 5 Ricoh family dealers, and now 1 of them will be a branch. You know who will get all the major accounts and shipin's.

I read the official Ricoh press release today and it stated that IKON will remain IKON. That made me feel a little better.

After talking with our owners about it this morning, they said that they knew about it and knew that something was fixing to happen but they didn't know when. They said that they heard that HP was offering to buy IKON as well and had just made an offer. They said that this is why Ricoh offered so much for the buy out.

Most importantly though, the one thing that the three of us left the conversation with was this... "As long as we continue to give the personal attention to our clients, as well as quailty service, our company will be fine. As for our growth being stampered by this, the same rules apply. We just need to keep doing what we are doing. Continue to stay on top of new technology, keep in touch with our customers and continue to offer them quality service. If we continue doing those things, we will do just fine.

As for the IKON dealers getting all the big accounts and ship-in's. I agree with you, but one interesting thing happened yesterday. I found out that a local national account is being turned over to our dealership. For whatever reason, our shop got a phone call saying that it was ours now, but it's still a national account. Not sure how that works, but it's cool none the less!

Ikon will probably remain Ikon for quite awhile. I personally think Ricoh will do the same thing they did when they first bought Lanier: let it run as its own organisation and slowly weed out the non-Ricoh products (like the old analogue Toshibas they supported) and then completely absorb the operation over time, weeding out the bad seeds at the same time.
