President Donald Trump can't prevent New York prosecutors from pursuing him and his family even if he pardons them, said a state senator who wrote the law to stop this from happening.
In October 2019, New York Sen. Todd Kaminsky helped write legislation that closed the state's double-jeopardy loophole, which had stopped the state from pursuing cases pardoned by a president.
Trump and his organization currently face a string of investigations in New York, and the president is reportedly considering pardons for his family and associates.
"We knew that the president was corruptly using the pardon power," Kaminsky told Insider, citing Trump's 2017 pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
"If the president pardoned his own family member for something he did running the president's business ... that would fall squarely into our law," he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election Tuesday, six weeks after the vote and a day after the Electoral College officially affirmed Biden's win.

While many world leaders congratulated President-elect Biden within days of the election, the Kremlin said at the time that it deemed it "correct" to wait for the official results before Putin congratulated the winner.

The outreach to the incoming administration comes amid news that may further strain US-Russian relations, following a CNN-Bellingcat investigation that identified Russian specialists who trailed Putin's main political opponent, opposition leader Alexey Navalny. It also comes as US officials scramble to respond to a massive data breach attributed to Russian hackers.

Longtime GOP strategist Steve Schmidt announced that he is registering as a Democrat after nearly 30 years with the Republican Party.

Schmidt made the announcement during an episode of the "Battleground" podcast published Monday, as he and co-host David Plouffe were discussing the Republican House members and state attorneys general that backed Texas's ill-fated election lawsuit before the Supreme Court.

"I spent 29 years as a Republican, I've spent two and a half as an independent, and later this afternoon I will register as a member of the Democratic Party," Schmidt told Plouffe. "Because in America today, it's only the Democratic Party-which is the oldest political party in the world-that stands for the ideas and ideals of American liberty."

Few of them believe Trump would actually follow through on the threat, the CNN report added.
"He's throwing a f---ing temper tantrum," one source said. "He's going to leave. He's just lashing out."
On Monday, a vote by the Electoral College confirmed Joe Biden as president-elect. Trump still has refused to acknowledge Biden's victory.

GOP senator blocks bill to provide $1,200 stimulus checks

GOP Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.) on Friday blocked an effort to pass a second round of stimulus checks, arguing coronavirus relief needs to be targeted and raising concerns about the country's debt.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) tried to get consent, which requires the cooperation of every senator, to pass his bill that would provide $1,200 for individuals who make up to $75,000 - the exact same language that Congress passed as part of the CARES Act in March.

"What I'm proposing is what every senator has supported already, this year. ... What I'm proposing will give working folks in my state and across this country a shot ... at getting back up on their feet," Hawley said from the Senate floor.

But Johnson objected. Under the Senate's rules any one senator can request to pass a bill but any other senator can object and block it.
