I must say that that I'm not looking forward to Hurricane season this year. I can almost throw a rock and hit the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Katrina was in 2005, but it's still fresh in my mind. I got the hell out of dodge before it hit. A lot of people that live here rode it out. I'll never understand it. We weren't allowed to come back for a while but when they did it was utter destruction. It took a long time to rebuild our cities. I don't know if I could go through that again.Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment

Im not from there but i have read alot of damage was because of the water surge and the levees did not hold up but since then (correct me if i am wrong) they redesigned that whole levee system .Comment

The damage to New Orleans (about 45 minutes from where I live) was because the levees broke. You are correct, most of the damage to New Orleans was from the levees not holding up. But the eye of the Hurricane passed over where I live (Mississippi) and we got the worst of the title surge and high winds. The media didn't cover Mississipi like they did New Orleans.Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment

I've been though 2 cat 5 hurricanes, both were supposed to miss us, but they took a last minute quick turn. The last one lasted for 8-10 hours and I swear it sounded like the house was going to blow to pieces the entire time, I watched the windows bow from the pressure and listened to the house creak, while this is happening you are hoping that the tidal surge is not going to be bad enough to flood your house because the last place you want to be is outside in 125+ mph winds with nowhere to go. It's scary as hell and your are at mother natures fate. The worst feeling during the storm is there is nothing you can do but hope for the best when it's passed, and that is when the real work starts. The sound of sirens is very eerie following the event because that is all you hear for days. Stepping out of your house when the storm has passed for the first time is APOCALYPTIC to say the least.Comment
