Re: How Russia hacked the Democrats email
Today in a joint FBI/ Dept of National intelligence news briefing the head of both agencies declared that Russia, China and Iran were actively trying to influence the US election.
They strongly urged both the media and voters to be on guard about the news they might hear before and after the election.

There is also some concern as to why these two officials are broadcasting this information now. DNI Radcliffe a Trump political appointee claims this dis-information attempt is designed to hurt Trump. It is not clear how that is when the dis-information is threatening Democratic voters from voting.Comment

FBI, DOJ announce indictment against 8 Chinese operatives
Feds have arrested 5 suspects accused of harassing a NJ resident on behalf of the Chinese government
FBI, DOJ announce indictment against 8 Chinese operatives | Fox News
FBI Director Christopher Wray and Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers announced an indictment of eight Chinese operatives accused of taking part in a widespread campaign to intimidate and coerce dissidents around the world that have reached U.S. soil.
During a Wednesday news conference, Demers stated that the alleged acts were part of China's Operation Fox Hunt, which the Chinese government claims is an international anti-corruption campaign, but the U.S. believes to be a plot to target political opponents and critics.
DuCharme said that during that time, the Chinese government directed the defendants to engage in illegal activities to coerce a New Jersey resident identified as John Doe-1 to return to China to face charges.
“Rather than go through appropriate channels with the U.S. government," DuCharme said, they acted outside the law, engaging in "shockingly overt acts" that allegedly included harassing and conducting surveillance of John Doe-1's daughter.
At one point, one of the defendants and an unidentified co-conspirator allegedly placed a note on the door of Doe's home that said, "If you are willing to go back to the mainland and spend 10 years in prison, your wife and children will be all right. That’s the end of this matter!"
"The sad fact was that this is hardly an isolated incident," Wray said.Comment

FBI warns of "imminent" ransomware attacks on hospital systems
FBI warns of "imminent" ransomware attacks on hospital systems - CBS News
Federal agencies warned that cybercriminals are unleashing a wave of data-scrambling extortion attempts against the U.S. healthcare system designed to lock up hospital information systems, which could hurt patient care just as nationwide cases of COVID-19 are spiking.
In a joint alert Wednesday, the FBI and two federal agencies warned that they had "credible information of an increased and imminent cybercrime threat to U.S. hospitals and healthcare providers." The alert said malicious groups are targeting the sector with attacks that produce "data theft and disruption of healthcare services."
The cyberattacks involve ransomware, which scrambles data into gibberish that can only be unlocked with software keys provided once targets pay up. Independent security experts say it has already hobbled at least five U.S. hospitals this week and could impact hundreds more
The offensive by a Russian-speaking criminal gang coincides with the U.S. presidential election, although there is no immediate indication they were motivated by anything but profit.
"We are experiencing the most significant cyber security threat we've ever seen in the United States," Charles Carmakal, chief technical officer of the cybersecurity firm Mandiant, said in a statement.Comment

Trump campaign website hacked
FBI warns of "imminent" ransomware attacks on hospital systems - CBS News
President Donald Trump's campaign website appeared to fall victim to hackers Tuesday night.
"This site was seized," read a message that was briefly posted on a page at donaldjtrump.com. The "world has had enough of the fake news spreaded daily" by the president, it continued.
The message said it had information that "discredits" the president and his family, and it demanded cryptocurrency to either release or withhold the information.
The site soon appeared to go offline, and it was restored without the hacked message a short time later.
A spokesman for the Trump campaign, Tim Murtaugh, said the "website was defaced and we are working with law enforcement authorities to investigate the source of the attack."Comment

Ransomware-as-a-Service, Open-Source Malware Fueling Attack Spikes in 2020
Ransomware is too lucrative to fade away. Its brilliance is in its simplicity. And shifting trends make it easier than ever to leverage in cybercriminal activity.
Ransomware-as-a-Service, Open-Source Malware Fueling Attack Spikes in 2019 | SonicWall
As each passing day presents us with a new ransomware victim, we can clearly see that ransomware is here to stay — and businesses and organizations should invest now to protect their brand, networks, data and customers.
According to the mid-year update of the 2019 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report, ransomware volume raced to 110.9 million in the first half of 2019 — a 15% year-to-date increase over 2018.
The most alarming ransomware data was sourced from the U.K. After enjoying a 59% decline in ransomware in 2018, the region saw ransomware volume jump 195% year-to-date for the first half of the year.
But it’s not just about volume. Globally, cybercriminals continue to pivot toward new tactics. Exclusive SonicWall data highlights an escalation in ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) and open-source malware kits in the first half of 2019.
... you do not even have to be a very skilled criminal anymore to attack businesses for profit. You can rent ransomware on the cloud for a monthly fee and use it like Office 365.Comment
