The Food and Drug Administration’s staff endorsed Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, a critical step in bringing a third shot to the U.S. marketplace.

The staff report released Wednesday is meant to brief the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, which will meet Friday to review J&J’s request for emergency use authorization.

During similar requests by Pfizer and Moderna, the agency authorized those companies’ vaccinations one day after the committee of outside medical advisors backed emergency use authorization. The committee is expected to recommend J&J’s vaccine. The FDA doesn’t have to follow the committee’s recommendation, but it often does.

Recent results from a large randomized clinical trial in hospitalized patients, a population similar to the population for which chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine were authorized for emergency use, demonstrated that hydroxychloroquine showed no benefit on mortality or in speeding recovery. This outcome was consistent with other new data, including data showing that the suggested dosing regimens for chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are unlikely to kill or inhibit the virus that causes COVID-19. The totality of scientific evidence currently available indicate a lack of benefit.

With the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines now available there is not much point in trying to keep hydroxychloroquine in the conversation.

Biden adviser Anita Dunn made the revealing remark in a conversation with "an associate" during the campaign, veteran journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes revealed in their book.
Dunn's comment was something "campaign officials believed but would never say in public," the authors wrote in "Lucky: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency," which is scheduled for release next week.



The bombshell comment was first reported Wednesday by The Guardian, which obtained an early copy of the book.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki didn't immediately return a request for comment on Dunn's remark.
