Actually there are some animals that do have more than 2 genders. As an example, the donkeys, horses and mules. Males are stallions for horses and jacks for donkeys. For mules there are 4 genders. a john is a male, a molly is a female and then there are jenny mules and hinny mules. They are a mix between a horse and a donkey. Thew type depends on the breed of the sire. They are generally not capable of breeding and are therefore 2 types of neuter. No wonder the donkey party is confused about gender.

Thanks for the biology lesson Slim. That's a lot of useless information. Did you bump your head again?

        CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

        Biden pledges free tests

His plan for 500 million COVID-19 tests marks a major change to his offensive against the virus.

BY JOSH BOAK AND RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR

        Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Fighting the omicron variant surging through the country, President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that the government would provide 500 million free rapid tests, increase support for hospitals under strain and redouble vaccination and boosting efforts.

In remarks Tuesday at the White House, Biden detailed major changes to his COVID-19 winter plan, his hand forced by the arrival of the fast-spreading variant, whose properties are not yet fully understood by scientists. Yet his message was clear that the winter holidays could be close to normal for the vaccinated while potentially dangerous for the unvaccinated.

His pleas are not political, he emphasized. He noted that former President Donald Trump has gotten his booster shot, and he said it’s Americans’ “patriotic duty” to get vaccinated.

“It’s the only responsible thing to do,” the president said. “Omicron is serious and potentially deadly business for unvaccinated people.”

Biden chastised social media and people on cable TV who have made misleading statements to discourage people from getting vaccinated.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering loosening its isolation length recommendations for fully vaccinated individuals -- particularly health care workers -- who test positive for Covid-19 but don't have symptoms.

Fauci's comments were the strongest yet from the nation's top infectious disease expert in favor of revisiting the CDC's isolation guidance, which recommends 10 full days for people who have the virus, even if asymptomatic.

Fauci told CNN that "no decisions" have been made yet, but that a discussion is underway about allowing infected health care workers who are asymptomatic to return to work sooner, as new Covid cases and hospitalizations rise and are expected to put a strain on the health care system.

FDA authorizes first pill to treat Covid-19

The US Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday authorized Pfizer's antiviral pill, Paxlovid, to treat Covid-19 in high-risk individuals age 12 and older who weigh at least 88 pounds.

This is the first antiviral Covid-19 pill authorized for ill people to take at home, before they get sick enough to be hospitalized.

"Today's authorization of PAXLOVID represents another tremendous example of how science will help us ultimately defeat this pandemic, which, even two years in, continues to disrupt and devastate lives across the world. This breakthrough therapy, which has been shown to significantly reduce hospitalizations and deaths and can be taken at home, will change the way we treat COVID-19, and hopefully help reduce some of the significant pressures facing our healthcare and hospital systems," Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement. "Pfizer stands ready to begin delivery in the U.S. immediately to help get PAXLOVID into the hands of appropriate patients as quickly as possible."

Paxlovid combines a new antiviral drug named nirmatrelvir and an older one called ritonavir. Last week, Pfizer released updated results that showed the treatment cut the risk of hospitalization or death by 89% if given to high-risk adults within a few days of their first symptoms. If given within the first five days of symptoms, the efficacy was similar: 88%.

In November, the Biden administration announced that it would purchase 10 million treatment courses for $5.295 billion. A five-day course of Paxlovid includes three pills given twice a day. President Biden said he was encouraged by the "promising data" from Pfizer and said the drug would "mark a significant step forward in our path out of the pandemic."

He called Paxlovid a "potentially powerful tool in our fight against the virus, including the Omicron variant," but stressed that getting vaccinated and receiving a booster shot remained "the most important tools we have to save lives."

Separately, Merck has requested emergency use authorization for its antiviral pill, molnupiravir. It was narrowly recommended by FDA's advisers in a 13-10 vote at the end of November after data showed it cut the risk of hospitalization or death by 30% among high-risk adults. This was lower than an earlier analysis suggesting that number could be around 50%. The FDA has not announced whether it will authorize the treatment.

Remdesivir, sold under the brand name Veklury, is the only antiviral approved by FDA for treatment of Covid-19. It's given intravenously, not as a pill that can be taken at home.

... this pill does not replace the need to get first vaccinated which is far less expensive for the federal gov't to procure.
