I have noticed that a lot of people that have Veterans day off, like teachers, bankers, state workers, are not veterans. On the other hand, just about every veteran I know has to work on Veterans day, as they are blue coller workers, and blue coller work on Veterans day.

As a veteran the only time I could get part of the day off was if my Army Reserve unit was going to be in the parade.

My father in law was in the merchant marine crossing the Atlantic during WWII serving aboard an oil tanker.

Everyone aboard knew one torpedo hit from a German submarine would likely result in almost everyone aboard being burned alive.

By all accounts in his early years he was a nice young man from a rural small town background.

He survived the war but the constant fear of a horrible death turned him into a heavy smoker and drinker fro the rest of his life.

30 years after the war he choose to leave his family, move far away and drink himself to death.

              I married his daughter.
