President Biden presented the Medal of Freedom medal to 17 people Thursday, including Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and the late Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Biden also bestowed the nation’s highest civilian honor on Sandra Lindsay, the New York City nurse who became the first American to receive the COVID-19 vaccine on live television in December 2020.

The U.S. economy added 372,000 jobs and the unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent in June as a strong labor market held firm amid rising inflation and recession fears.

Job growth in June far exceeded the projections of economists, who expected the U.S. to add roughly 278,000 jobs last month, according to consensus estimates

“The previous administration lost more jobs on its watch than any administration since Herbert Hoover. That's a fact,” Biden told a crowd of union workers and retirees in Cleveland Wednesday. “All based on failed trickle-down economics...We came in with a fundamentally different economic vision.”
