The Federal VAT is called GST (Goods and Services Tax) and charged at the rate of 5 % --- plus the Provincial Sales Tax of about 8 % in most provinces/territories results often to a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of about 13 %.

I pay 15% HST where I live on most goods and services. In return, I get free healthcare. Most Canadians accept this trade off.

Please allow me to educate you in one little area. It's impossible to pay a 15% HST and then turn around and say that it's 'free'. There is no such thing as a free lunch and Canada is a very small country compared to the USA. Your "free" healthcare would bankrupt us.
