President Biden bans Russia-linked ships from US ports
Ban to begin from April 28, president says
The US, Europe, UK and Canada have now prevented any Russia-flagged, owned, operated or registered vessel from their ports.
PRESIDENT Joe Biden has announced a ban on all Russia-linked ships from US ports from April 28, extending prohibitions already in place in Europe, the UK and Canada.
The move is likely to affect 460 ships trading internationally, including the 160-tanker fleet owned by Russian Federation-controlled Sovcomflot, data from Lloyd’s List Intelligence shows.
The restrictions on port entry for Russia-linked ships comes as the European Union said it was also readying a phase-out of Russian oil and gas and was seeking political agreement in talks.
Bans and self-sanctioning by oil traders and refineries are already restricting business for the Russia-owned fleet, although vessel-tracking shows that volumes shipped have yet to be affected as cargoes divert to India and Asia and diesel shipments remain steady.
Novoship-owned, Liberia-flagged very large crude carrier Svet (IMO: 9625956) was seen diverting off Mozambique, while Sovcomflot tankers are tracked undertaking ship-to-ship transfers of Russian crude off Europe to circumvent pressure over oil import origin.
Last year Russia-affiliated vessels made about 1,800 visits to the US, according to news reports, suggesting that the ban would not have any impact on supply chain logistics snarls that have clogged container ports over the past year.
The proclamation specified that vessels included were those that were Russia-flagged, Russia-registered, or if they were operated, owned or registered by a Russian citizen, permanent resident or the federation.
The US movement further tightens movements of Russia-linked ships worldwide.
The US has already banned imports of Russian crude from April 22, while the UK was the first to move with restrictions on Russia-owned ships earlier in March, along with the phasing out of oil and oil products imports by the end of 2022.
Europe’s trade commissioner earlier today signaled in news interviews that the 27-member bloc was “ready to act fast” in phasing out Russia energy commodities but political agreement was needed.
A ban on Russian coal will start from mid-August, according to EU notices.

What does woke mean? Definition of woke culture in 2021 - and what critics mean by ‘woke police’
The term ‘woke’ has found its way into mainstream vocabulary, however many are still unsure about the meaning behind the word
As language changes and continues to evolve, it’s not unusual for a word or phrase to make its way into the mainstream and leave many confused about its actual meaning.
One that’s been used with increasing frequency over the past few years is “woke”.
The old meaning of the word defines woke as simply the “past simple of wake”, as in to wake up, or awake.
In a modern sense, the meaning of the word has changed a lot, and in 2017, the new meaning of the word woke was officially added to the dictionary.
Described by Merriam-Webster as “chiefly US slang”, the dictionary defines the word as: “Aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).”
Woke nowadays refers to being aware or well informed in a political or cultural sense, especially regarding issues surrounding marginalised communities - it describes someone who has “woken up” to issues of social injustice.
Merriam-Webster says: “Stay woke became a watch word in parts of the Black community for those who were self-aware, questioning the dominant paradigm and striving for something better.”
Where does the word woke come from?
The earliest usage of woke in this politically aware sense can be traced back to a 1962 New York Times Magazine article written by William Melvin Kelley, titled If You’re Woke You Dig It.
The article described the appropriation of African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) by white beatniks.
The use of the word reached mainstream vernacular when the Black Lives Matter movement used the hashtag #staywoke following the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri by police in 2014.
“The word woke became entwined with the Black Lives Matter movement; instead of just being a word that signalled awareness of injustice or racial tension, it became a word of action. Activists were woke and called on others to stay woke,” Merriam-Webster explains.
What does woke stand for?
Unlike other four letter words associated with the social justice movement, the individual letters of woke don’t stand for anything.
The word woke itself is not an acronym.
What does ‘woke police’ mean?
The term “woke police” is used, mainly, by critics of the movement as a way to negatively describe those who identify as woke and fight for social justice issues.
The term is used to claim that woke people are policing others actions and words, generally in response to backlash someone else has received for their words or actions.
For example, if a celebrity has been found to have used racist or sexist language and is being held accountable for their actions, defenders of said person may say that the “woke police” have been offended, as a way of undermining the backlash.
Writer, broadcaster, former barrister and Guardian columnist Afua Hirsch says: “The truth is, there are no woke police.”
Hirsch explains: "In reality, the only thing that unites the woke is an intellectual curiosity about identity and how complex, how nuanced, how rooted in disparate histories it can be. The real groupthink, the genuinely cohesive crowd, it’s increasingly clear, is that of the anti-woke, the most weaponised identity of all.”
Hirsch points out the irony of “the rightwing culture warriors [who] claim to support free speech” but “they seem to want minorities to shut up and stop complaining”.

GOP politicians are choosing anti-wokeness over friendliness to big business
There’s a bizarre metamorphosis happening in American politics as culture takes over the conversation: Republican politicians are choosing the war on “wokeness” over the friendliness to big business that was their guiding light for decades.
Florida Republicans are on the cusp of a whirlwind effort to punish Disney for its opposition to a law many consider to be anti-LGBTQ.
Meanwhile, in Texas, the governor is threatening he could use his power once again to slow border traffic with arguably unnecessary safety inspections to make a point about immigration.
These various political statements have consequences for LGBTQ kids, parents and teachers in Florida schools; for people in Orlando who might feel an increased tax burden; and potentially for all the Americans who get food or products that cross the southern border.
Things are also getting personal. The frustrated speech by a Michigan Democrat, state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, about her morals and faith racked up more than 13 million views on Twitter this week.
McMorrow was responding to campaign material from a Republican lawmaker, state Sen. Lana Theis, who accused McMorrow of wanting to “groom and sexualize kindergarteners” and teach “that 8-year-olds are responsible for slavery.”
That derogatory and anti-LGBTQ term, “groomers,” is the same one an aide to Gov. Ron DeSantis used to deflect criticism of the law that restricts what can be discussed in Florida schools – which opponents have dubbed “Don’t Say Gay.”
Anti-woke is working for Republicans. Republicans don’t seem to mind being labeled anti-LGBTQ, and they’re almost inviting the corporate backlash, relishing the chance to look like fighters.
At the behest of DeSantis, Florida’s legislature took less than a week to push through a bill to remove the special government status Disney had enjoyed around Walt Disney World.
The lawmakers ignored concerns that the move could raise taxes on voters in Orlando as Disney cedes local government roles – road maintenance and emergency dispatching, among others – that the company has performed for itself for more than 50 years.
Just a guest in Florida. Disney is synonymous with both family entertainment and Florida to many Americans, but the state’s Republicans are disavowing it.
“They are a California company that is a guest in the state of Florida,” state Rep. Randy Fine on Wednesday night before the vote. “And they are a guest that has had special privileges that no other company has had. If you want special privileges, you’d better be on your best behavior.”
Many Republicans in the state say the issue will be resolved before the bill would take hold in 2023. But the message to Disney has been sent: Hush up about the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law.
Turnarounds. The rift between Florida’s Republicans and the Magic Kingdom has been brewing for weeks. Disney was initially slow to criticize the law that critics worry will bar teachers from using words like “gay” in elementary schools. After Disney employees walked out in protest, CEO Bob Chapek criticized the legislation.
Today’s divide between Florida and Disney is certainly a turnaround from late last year, when the company announced it would move employees from California to Florida because of a more “business-friendly climate.”
Other fights with industry. DeSantis previously picked fights with the cruise ship industry during the pandemic.
And Florida isn’t the only state that doesn’t mind tripping up businesses to make political statements.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott created a costly traffic jam of trucks at the Texas border with stepped-up safety inspections earlier in April. He wanted to protest the Biden administration’s plan to end Covid-19 restrictions that barred most migrants at the border.
He’s also busing migrants to Washington, DC, and he teased he could send buses to President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware. Abbott doesn’t want to see a likely flood of migrants. But his move further kinked the supply chain and caused food headed north to spoil in transit. The entire statement cost billions of dollars.
“I have the capability – at any time – to turn those inspections back on. That will backlog those trucks that are trying to come across the border. That will cause havoc in Mexico,” Abbott told Sean Hannity on Fox on April 19, warning Mexico’s government to slow the flow of migrants through the country to the US border.
Political payoff. Far from paying a political price for targeting Disney, DeSantis’ strategy is paying off.
“He’s gotten more popular,” Enten said Wednesday. “This is why he does it. It works for him.”
Enten pointed to an increase in DeSantis’ approval rating, which has risen by 6 percentage points since August and is now over 50%, which is helping his chances at reelection in November: “This is the thing that I think we always sort of don’t keep in mind with Ron DeSantis. He’s a good politician.”
Abbott is also facing reelection in November. After that, both men could conceivably be running in a presidential primary against former President Donald Trump. It could be a melee.Comment

All bullshit aside, Trudeau really is a dictator. He's not a wanna-be, he's the real thing.
Editorial: Trudeau tries to bring back online censorship bill
Canada is currently engaged in a national conversation about COVID-19 rules, with many people urging governments across the country to drop all of the rules like the United Kingdom, and other countries, have done.
Basically, the bill means the Canadian Radio‑television and Telecommunications Commission will be granted permission to regulate a lot of social media content created by Canadians.
