Re: The Shining City Upon a Hill

... the Governor of New York immediately declared the State House Assembly back to work to craft new laws that would effectively nullify the Supreme Courts ruling. The specific open carry law just reversed by the Supreme Court has been on the books for over 100 years in New York state as precedent.

Roe vs Wade has been overturned by the US Supreme Court talking away a constitutional right for women in a 6-3 split decision.

The USA has gone backwards 50 years in time compared to almost every other country in the world.

President Biden, in anticipation of this ruling, has four executive actions that he could soon declare.

Abortion services will remain legal in many states but quickly become illegal in others.

A sad day for women in America that will be remembered as the day that women become 2nd class citizens no longer free to make decisions about their own bodies.

          Most states will support abortion.

... many primarily Republican states will immediately move to take away abortion rights. ... a definite ballot box issue come Nov 2022.

Women's constitutional rights have been taken away and Republican politicians will pay a price come election time.

... this Fox News reporter has a long history of trying to badger both Jenn Psaki and Jenn-Pierre with gotcha questions to try and make political points during a press briefing.

99% of the time he gets swatted down when confronted with factual responses.

I do not blame her for reaching a snapping point on the same day the Supreme Court took away a constitutional right of women in the USA seeking abortions.

House passes first major federal gun safety legislation in decades, bill will next go to Biden for signature

The House passed a bipartisan bill on Friday to address gun violence that amounts to the first major federal gun safety legislation in decades.

The final tally was 234 to 193 with 14 Republicans voting with Democrats to approve the measure.
Now that the House has passed the bill, it will go to President Joe Biden to be signed into law, marking a significant bipartisan breakthrough on one of the most contentious policy issues in Washington. The Senate passed the bill in a late-night vote Thursday.

The measure includes millions of dollars for mental health, school safety, crisis intervention programs and incentives for states to include juvenile records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
It also makes significant changes to the process when someone ages 18 to 21 goes to buy a firearm and closes the so-called boyfriend loophole, a victory for Democrats, who have long fought for that.

The package represents the most significant new federal legislation to address gun violence since the expired 10-year assault weapons ban of 1994 -- though it fails to ban any weapons and falls far short of what Democrats and polls show most Americans want to see.

Securing a bipartisan agreement on major gun legislation has been notoriously difficult for lawmakers in recent years even in the face of countless mass shootings across the country.

Democrats in particular have been quick to celebrate the bipartisan gun deal since action to address gun violence is a major priority for the party.

But the bill's passage was overshadowed on Friday by the news that the Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade, holding that there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion.
The opinion is the most consequential Supreme Court decision in decades and will transform the landscape of women's reproductive health in America.

It came one day after the Supreme Court struck down a New York gun law enacted more than a century ago that places restrictions on carrying a concealed handgun outside the home.

The rulings once again highlight the limited power of the Democratic party, despite it controlling both branches of Congress and the White House.

House GOP leaders oppose bill, but bipartisan support still expected

Despite broad bipartisan support for the bill in the Senate, top House Republican leaders came out in opposition to the bill and urged their members to vote "no."

Fourteen House Republicans voted for the bill, however. They included:

                      1. Liz Cheney of Wyoming
                      2. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois
                      3. Tom Rice of South Carolina
                      4. John Katko of New York
                      5. Maria Salazar of Florida
                      6. Chris Jacobs of New York
                      7. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania
                      8. Peter Meijer of Michigan
                      9. Fred Upton of Michigan
                      10. Tony Gonzales of Texas
                      11. Steve Chabot of Ohio
                      12. Mike Turner of Ohio
                      13. David Joyce of Ohio
                      14. Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio

The bill passed the Senate on Thursday with 15 Republicans joining Democrats in support. The final tally was 65-33.

The legislation came together in the aftermath of recent mass shootings at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school and a Buffalo, New York, supermarket that was in a predominantly Black neighborhood.

A bipartisan group of negotiators set to work in the Senate and unveiled legislative text on Tuesday. The bill -- titled the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act -- was released by Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Democratic Sens. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.

Lawmakers then raced to pass the bill before they left Washington for the July Fourth recess.
As lawmakers searched for a compromise, there were points at which it was not clear whether the effort would succeed or fall apart. But while the bipartisan effort appeared to be on thin ice after several key sticking points emerged, ultimately negotiators were able to resolve issues that arose.

                      Key provisions in the bill

The bill includes $750 million to help states implement and run crisis intervention programs. The money can be used to implement and manage red flag programs -- which through court orders can temporarily prevent individuals in crisis from accessing firearms -- and for other crisis intervention programs like mental health courts, drug courts and veterans courts.

This bill closes a years-old loophole in domestic violence law -- the "boyfriend loophole" -- which barred individuals who have been convicted of domestic violence crimes against spouses, partners with whom they shared children or partners with whom they cohabitated from having guns. Old statutes didn't include intimate partners who may not live together, be married or share children. Now the law will bar from having a gun anyone who is convicted of a domestic violence crime against someone they have a "continuing serious relationship of a romantic or intimate nature."

The law isn't retroactive. It will, however, allow those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes to restore their gun rights after five years if they haven't committed other crimes.

The bill encourages states to include juvenile records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System with grants as well as implements a new protocol for checking those records.

The bill goes after individuals who sell guns as primary sources of income but have previously evaded registering as federally licensed firearms dealers. It also increases funding for mental health programs and school security.

Actually all the decision did was return to the individual states the right to decide what their state want. It is a Constitutional Right of the states that has been returned to the states. Personally I wished that the Conservatives had first used Roe v Wade to shut down Planned Parenthood abortion clinics as they by their very existence were in direct violation of the right to privacy of pregnant women seeking an abortion. The Right to Privacy was the actually ruling of the original Roe v Wade decision.

Currently it looks like the large population east cost and west coast states will. In the heartland it is a different story.

... where does it say in the Constitution that you have a right to own an AR-15, or have the right to drive a car without wearing a seat belt or scream fire in a crowded theater? The world has moved on from 235 years ago when the Constitution was written.

It is both lazy and insincere to say that just because something was not written in a 235 year old document it should apply to today.

Contraception is not in the Constitution, the right to travel is not in the constitution, gay marriage is not in the constitution, women are not in the constitution, people of colour are not in the constitution. Are you eager to take those rights away as well?

Regardless, for the first time in US history a women's constitutional right, deemed fundamental and relied upon by millions of women has been taken away by a court with a majority of judges appointed by a party that has not won a popular presidential election in 30 years. The US has a Senate that is controlled by minority rule and a House that suffers from gerrymandering that amplifies and undermines US democracy.

Hopefully, you do not have a daughter or a niece who now will be forced to endure the terror of an unwanted pregnancy!
