Because signing the mineral deal is step 1. Step 2 will be settled before the deal is worked out before negotiating with Putin. But Trump has been clear there will be no American boots on the ground.

Few things, as for Ukraine security guarantee, if the US has mineral assets that American companies are mining in Ukraine do you think Russia would invade Ukraine after a deal is made? Maybe under a weak Dem president not Trump.
The Ukraine politicians are probably the most corrupt in the world. They all have some of the billions we sent there stashed away. They will take that money and head for the hills if Russia takes over the country. That includes the most corrupt Zelenskyy!

A real Russian asset is someone like Obama caught on a hot mic saying to Russian Medvedev ,"after my election I have more flexibility." Medvedev replied that he would "transmit this information to Vladimir," as in Putin, who was prime minister at the time.
