It's ridiculous that someone would actually post an answer on how to reset or change a meter on this open internet forum. Most of us here (I think) make our living because we depend on meter readings so I take it kind of personal when someone blurts out "oh this is how you turn the meter off or this is how you change the meter." It just -pisses- me off. I think said persons should be banned. </rant>
Tired of people asking about reseting meters.

Very well said! Yet we have people offering to sell the meter reseting secrets on the things for sale or trade section. And they Quote " there are no laws against this ". Where has integrity gone?Online Store is closed. Chip resetting is a thing of the past! Thank you to all my past customers.

Worse than spamming.
I personally have had enough of these resetting meter requests. We're professionals, right? (Well some of us...)
To me, this is worse than spamming. It is most certainly a lapse of professional etiquette, and we could use a little more professional etiquette.
So what about banning members that hand out Service Manager Modes in public forum? I don't care so much about standard simulation modes, or anything that appears in the standard manual.
Poll, anyone? If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I agree outside of telling someone how to get a developer reference, adjust exposure, or something along those lines... I don't think there is any reason anyone should discuss or disclose any information on tampering with meters. Glad some other people feel the same.I will not give you service manuals or firmware.Comment

Geez, and I thought I brought on this discussion after my "Idiot!" comment earlier this week.
I too, am glad to hear there are some responsible professionals here. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:

There's always going to be some asshole who comes along and think he's a hero by giving the information out, no matter how old the post is.Comment
-
If you notice, the person giving out the info and telling how to do stuff you shouldn't, is usually a newbee.... For some reason they think they're a hero answering the question on how to reset a meter, when the question goes unanswered by the rest of us. Some people just don't have a clue....My mission here on Earth is to help all you Dum-Dums!Comment

That's very true. Some newbee comes along and since he doesn't see it answered, he posts it and thinks he's a big hero.Comment

Here's a thought then - when one of these posts crops up, first person who sees it puts a response on saying something like:
Resetting counters on a machine is ILLEGAL and is fraudulent. You will receive NO ASSISTANCE on this matter. Please do not request meter reset procedures or your account will be deleted.
That way, even the newbie techs will get the message.

I have just been reporting said posts and usually they get deleted/changed.I will not give you service manuals or firmware.Comment

I wonder what the response would be if you went to a site for auto repair and ask how to roll the meter back in a new car.The greatest enemy of knowledge isn't ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. Stephen HawkingComment

I agree---however, there were some that did it to resell a "refurbished" machine. The place where I worked until '06 did this---better than the "Canon refurb'd" machines, like the NP6650 with the weird painted covers...the 1st models wwere done (circa 1987) up until even 2002 or so, and no drive assemblies were replaced---just corona WIRES, drum, and feed tires...the duplexer gears were never replaced, etc., and I even saw a few that had that static tinsel bar still in there that would make the inside look like the 4th of July with all the arcing!Comment

Tired of people asking about reseting meters.
From service mode it can be done easily on most printers. It happens occasionally, because I get older core machines that are tore up too much to only have 22,000 pages on it. When I rebuild these printers I have no idea if the page count is correct. Sometimes it happens if a tech puts in a refurbished formatter and doesnt put in the prior board's information. It is unethical, but what can anyone do about it. When I give out service mode codes for printers, I assume that the person is a technician and that they need it to reset maintenance counts, clear event logs, or other functions, like registration adjustments. I really have no idea what the person is going to do with the info. If it is in a locked down area for copiers, then I think everyone is right not to give out the info. But for printers, its a different story, because everything a tech needs is in service mode. I just object to giving it to end users, because you can really mess things up. (Giving end users instructions on clearing NVRAM is very dangerous. Of course, if they screw it up its their machine.)Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".Comment
