NY Times Wakes Up to Corruption in Ukraine as Officials Admit Military Contract Money ‘Vanished’

In a potential signal of shifting attitudes on how the war in Ukraine is covered in the legacy media, the New York Times is starting to slowly acknowledge the endemic corruption that has been a defining feature of the former Soviet state as officials have admitted that money for military contracts has “vanished”.
Following the dismissal of Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov amid a slew of corruption scandals surrounding the war effort against Russia, the New York Times acknowledged thatthe“enduring challenge of corruption in Ukraine” has “emerged as a rare area of criticism of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s leadership.”

Although Reznikov has yet to be tied with any of the corruption scandals personally, the Times went on to admit that the resignation has “elevated the issue to the highest level of Ukrainian politics”. Unnamed Ukrainian officials even told the paper that some funds intended for military contracts “failed to produce weaponry or ammunition and that some money has vanished,” while claiming that the issue was merely confined to the early days of the war.

The proclamation from the NY Times aged rather poorly. Just days later, as Breitbart News reported at the time, Transparency International gave Ukraine a score of 33 out of 100 in its annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), ranking 116th in the world and the second-lowest in all of Europe, only behind Russia.
Expressing concerns over the fate of the $113 billion in American taxpayer dollars sent to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee went on to note in February that “Ukrainian government officials allegedly engaged in bribery, used government vehicles for personal use, and purchased inflated food supplies for Ukrainian forces.”

... kind of like the large scale fraud and corruption that happened in the USA with COVID relief funds by American citizens. Some have now been convicted.

President Zelensky just replaced his Miniter of Defence with a new person who's previous job was to counter mishandling of funds.

The Finance Minister who just left was not accused of mishandling of funds.

That's easy to say when it's not your money. The USA has given more money to Ukraine than all other countries combined.

The longer this war drags on, the more unpopular it will be. That will be especially true if there are many setbacks.

... it is a certainty that at the end of this month, when Congress has to approve a new appropriations bill to fund the Federal gov't or risk once again shutting the gov't down, the more radical members of the Repbulican party will demand that funding for the Ukraine war be greatly reduced.

This is the great unstability of the American way of running a country. Few other nations have this recurring problem.

It probably dumped more money than everyone else into Afghanistan, and what did that achieve, not pointing the finger you know my stance on this.

That's probably because the USA pays the most money to defend the world and as a result, we have the most debt in the history of the world. It's very easy for someone that isn't from the USA to say that we should just fork over the money and shutup.

Fun Fact the TRUMP Administration added 25% of the debt in just 4 years and it wasn't for the Military

Ukraine has started using Clearview AI’s facial recognition during war

Ukraine's defense ministry on Saturday began using Clearview AI’s facial recognition technology, the company's chief executive told Reuters, after the U.S. startup offered to uncover Russian assailants, combat misinformation and identify the dead.

Ukraine is receiving free access to Clearview AI’s powerful search engine for faces, letting authorities potentially vet people of interest at checkpoints, among other uses, added Lee Wolosky, an adviser to Clearview and former diplomat under U.S. presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

The plans started forming after Russia invaded Ukraine and Clearview Chief Executive Hoan Ton-That sent a letter to Kyiv offering assistance, according to a copy seen by Reuters.
Clearview said it had not offered the technology to Russia, which calls its actions in Ukraine a "special operation."
Ukraine's Ministry of Defense did not reply to requests for comment. Previously, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation said it was considering offers from U.S.-based artificial intelligence companies like Clearview. Many Western businesses have pledged to help Ukraine, providing internet hardware, cybersecurity tools and other support.

The Clearview founder said his startup had more than 2 billion images from the Russian social media service VKontakte at its disposal, out of a database of over 10 billion photos total. read more
That database can help Ukraine identify the dead more easily than trying to match fingerprints and works even if there is facial damage, Ton-That wrote. Research for the U.S. Department of Energy found decomposition reduced the technology’s effectiveness while a paper from a 2021 conference showed promising results.

It should be noted that Clearview AI is an American company. Also, the USA is funding the vast majority of the bill of Ukraine. Nary a thank you from other countries.
