Avos. Its awesome to be living close to the export farms. Those are sub grade. About $7 for the crate!
The I grew up in used to have a cantaloupe, actually musk melon, packing shed. It was about a mile from my house and some days you could get a crate of 50 melons for as little as $0.25.

More and more control. Its scary. Soon you can be sued for giving your neighbor a basket of fruit and veg.

Its the nitrogen oxide gas and ammonia that would be the possible concern. It dissolves into water evaporates and comes down in raindrops. It is a concern just handled poorly.

If I recall from my physics class, the nitrogen molecule is heaver than the Oxygen molecule hence explaining the ratio. And, one might argue the fact but there is less oxygen molecules at higher altitudes, but this is due to the fact that there is less air pressure to "push" the oxygen molecules together.

If the fertilizer is used in just the right amount all of it gets used. It is the overuse that leads to leaching nitrogen pollutants into water runoff. Over marketing and bad implementation is the bigger problem.

There are also nitrogen fixing plant alternatives to use instead of commercial fertilizers for a small scale production farms, most bean crops, peanuts, etc. are used as cover crops to provide nitrogen to the soil. However, I'm not sure of their use for large farm long term applications, but with the recent "attacks/bans" on commercial synthetic fertilizers I am confident that we will see more of these "alternative" nitrogen fixing plants applied to these applications. And, the plus side to these natural nitrogen fixing plants is there is no "overuse" and leaching issues. I heard in Florida they are attributing Red Tide to an overuse of commercial fertilizers as a possible contributor.

So the best research for this time could be the cultivation and proper use of Rhizobium bacteria?

That is good to know that planting peanuts, peas or beans mixed with other crops would be beneficial in more than one way. Fixing nitrogen and feeding other plants at the same time. I am learning more about companion planing.

I tried perennial peanut around my avocado trees, but the rabbits thought it was a buffet for them, they ate it all within a few days of planting. So, I started using the Mimosa pudica plant. All nitrogen fixing plants pull atmospheric nitrogen (going back to DRichard's post) and turns it into ammonium, the roots of nitrogen fixers have nodules which contain ryzobia microbes. When you cutdown or till the plant it releases the stored nitrogen into the soil. We also use cow peas (Black eyed peas) to produce more peas in the process so over time you have very little overhead for your gained nitrogen in return and healthier neighboring fruit trees or soil for next years crop, in turn lowering your use of synthetic fertilizers. Here is a list of some nitrogen fixing plants to try Nitrogen Fixation: N-Fixing Plants & Bacteria, Their Importance
