gas cooktop clicking... I know.. an odd one for here

anyone have tinkered and fixed their cooktops? or friends' unit? Family friend's grandma has her unit clicking non stop...even with no flame.

    research yield the following

    - atleast one of the switches shorted, since they are wired in parallel
    * 4 burner, one wouldnt start flame on its own. I think this is the culprit.

    - electrode corroded ...
    - main ignition circuit.

having said so... can I just disconnect the problematic ignition switch? would there be safety concerns?

or... if anyone know a good appliance forum i can hop on to?

    much appreciated.

If anyone has an gas stove long enough, you've encountered this problem. It's usually caused by grease getting in the igniter. It's supposed to stop sparking after the burner is lit but the grease stops that from happening.

    Watch this:

PS - Let the problem burner burn for a few minutes. It helps get rid of the moister.

Each burner has a spark plug on the perimeter. If enough grease builds up between the stove top and the burner it will not make a nice arc, so it does not ignite the burner.

It sounds to me though that the switch (usually at the Hi end of the dial) is closed all the time, sit it's trying to ignite, even when the gas is off. Most stoves have four such burners and four controls, so four possible switches to check.

Bring along your VOM. That's my thought anyway. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Every time I have had a problem with a burner spark igniter clicking but the burner not lighting, it has been a dirty burner, not the igniter. Even with old pilot light stoves if the burner opening pointing at the tube going to the pilot was clogged, the burner would not light.
