How the hell do you cope?

I've just been watching the blizzards that are sweeping the US and Europe on the news and am wondering how you poor sods in the northen hemisphere cope with having to work in weather like that.
I was born in London and emigrated to Oz in my early teens and can still remember the bad winter of '66. I can remember walking through the slush to get to school and spending the day with wet feet and trying to keep my fingers warm enough so I could write. I also remember chillblains, cracked skin and having a permanent cold. I havent seen snow for over 40 years and I'm happy to keep it like that.
Its bad enough walking around town with toolcase, vacuum and laptop but having to do that with thick coats, boots and gloves then having to peel the lot off when you get to the customers heated office so you can work must be a pain in the arse for you guys.

My biggest whinge in Oz is when you leave your car in the sun for a few hours you have to run the air-cond for 5 min until the steering wheel has cooled down enough to touch.

    I too have moved south.

When I lived in Houghton most winter days I shovelled 8-10 inches of snow from my car and parking spot. A good portion of that has to do with the proximity to Lake Superior "lake effect snow". A mere 350 miles south the average is much less, maybe 1" or less per day. By comparison it's a walk in the park. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Completely agree with Lagonda. I always wondered about that myself. Melbourne does get pretty cold with southerly Antarctic winds, but nothing like the northen hemisphere........geeez.

mmmmmmm..... nice 34 degrees C today here in Melb.

I had a giggle fit today, reading in the paper about NASA moving a shuttle around in Florida at -2C and that apparently the people doing this did it in half hour shifts.

That was almost similar to the giggle fit I had when I was with UNIIMOG in Iran. Around November, the Iranian soldiers were putting on snow boots and parkas and gloves. I was still wearing shorts and tshirt and enjoying the much cooler winter, still a balmy 22C (which is about 74F).

Like the Special Service Force (Devils Brigade) motto, we ADAPT, IMPROVISE and OVERCOME!

And truth be told, I am a strong supporter of CLIMATE CHANGE AT ANY COST! Not that I think this is happening of course. PURE UNADULTERATED BULLSHIT in my opinion, especially in an area of Canada where winter weather is much more temperate relative to ROC and other areas north of the equator. After 6 weeks, we are finally getting a chinook (warm westerly winds from the coast). Will bring us up to a balmy +10C (sun tannin weather) from the average -20C to -30C we've been seeing over this last period. Most winters here in Calgary are dry and mild. The last couple have been worse than normal, though this is not unusual. Winter of 92-93 was the worst I saw....constant deep freeze for over 4 months of -30C and colder...and nothing compared to Baffin Island when I was there last in the middle of February back in 89. -60C average.

My state is on the line. Can have an ice storm on one day and 60F the next. It will be a frigid 40F today.

Driving down the M6 to Stoke yesterday, the temperature gauge in my car read -14.5deg. Shortly after, my window washer pump blew. The snow that's fallen off the roads still looks like it's literally just fallen, it's scary. It's making driving fun anyway.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

            Hit it.

We're supposed to have a high of almost 0 degrees F today here. Still working, although the car would just as soon not. about 4 ft of snow built up on the roof at work caused it to cave in yesterday. Still working, just brace it up and shovel the snow off. No problem.
I know I should be ashamed of myself. Strangely though, I am not.

My little rant at staff giving a crap excuse not to go to work

Hate to brag but San Diego's annual mean temperature is 64 degrees F, not too hot and not too cold. We do have snow in the mountains (about 60 miles away) occasionally, but it is still pleasant at the beach.

Woke to a balmy -15 F this morning, and it 'warmed' up to -2 F. At least my car started right up this morning, it didn't want to yesterday at -24 F.

Invest in a battery blanket. You can plug those in if you want, but not always necessary...it insulates the battery and helps improve the cold crank amps.

Also, go to light oil... 10/30 or 15/30 is ideal for winter.

50-70 cm of snow and temperatures from -15 to -40 degrees celcius, it's a normal Norwegian winter yet again...

Got back from a fly in gold mine in Northern Ontario on Wednesday night.
                              -40c plus wind chill.
1km walk from camp to mine site.
                              2 days. 20 machines (8 colour).

Attached is a zipped Google Earth .kmz file of the location.
I have driven there 3 times in the winter. 10 hours from Thunder Bay. 3 of that on bush roads.

                              Cancun sounds nice about now.....
