When I was young my grandpa had a two seat unit. One day he stood up and while pulling his pants up , a quarter dollar fell from his pocket and in the hole. He thought for a minute , pulled a $10 bill out and threw it in . "Grandpa, what are you doing, " I exclaimed. "You did not think I was going down there for just a quarter, did you?"was his reply.

Actually it was probably a british invention, because in the age of the industrial revolution in the uk, the mill owners used to build a block of toilets, actually a drainage ditch with cubicles built over it. To stop their employees from taking too much time for a dump, the bathroom attendant poured parrafin into the top end of the ditch, then they set fire to it. thus came the expression " who set a light under his arse"

I did see a two story 'outhouse' in Mattoon, IL while visiting friends there.

THANK GOODNESS it was closed up. I was told the upper floor was used by management and sales staff only.
