    Friday Drinks

I remember my days engineering ships, and at the end of most weeks the whole crew would hang around and have a few drinks and a BBQ. In this game, when Friday comes, I just wanna get the hell outta here. Been here for 4 years now, and not once have we even considered staying back for brews.

So, I ask, ,how many of you spend time with your workmates socially and what kind of activities are most popular?

    Enjoy the weekend all.

When I worked for a small dealership a little Friday social was quite common. Hell, we'd even meet up for a round of golf on an evening through the week in the summer. At a larger organization however it is damn near never, and even then only with one or two of the techs local to me, not a group thing. Honestly, most times I feel like I've been beaten like a rented mule and wouldn't want to spend time with most of the guys I work with. These days I just finish the job and go home to family.

Unfortunately, the way most techs are treated by their dealerships make them just want to get the hell out of there on Friday.
But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard... to be the Shepherd.

The first dealership I worked for had this great atmosphere. Once a week, usually a Friday night, the manager would show up with a case of beer, and three Mita DC-313Z machines to rebuild. There were five of us, and often these refurb parties carried straight through to Saturday, and two more cases.

Admittedly, the quality of the work started to diminish towards 6:00am, but we had a blast and got a lot of work done. A complete down-to-the-frame 2M copy refurb would take 10 hours or more for one machine, yet the five of us could do three machines in three hours (about half the time).

You know, techs live a solitary existence for the most part. We rarely get to work together on anything. And until the advent of the forums, we don't get many opportunities to discuss our work. The customers don't care how it gets fixed. My wife listens to me, but not because she cares anything about copiers. She's just amazingly patient. I don't know why.

I do miss the refurb parties. I would probably remember a lot more about them, since I would probably drink considerably less. Since I'm the tech, manager, parts guy, delivery, and dispatch, I'd end up drinking all by myself. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
        5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I think this is why many techs choose this career these days.

That said, we are having drinks this Friday.

copier techs socialising.... ever noticed whenever someone asks 'what do you do'? the conversation dies in the ars. when asked 'what do you do'? do you a. lie your face off and bat on, or b. pretend to vomit as a decoy

The company organises some social events. I went bowling recently. Payed for by the bosses. It was really the first time I'd ever got to meet head office and call centre staff. It was nice to put faces to names and voices on the phone. There was a little 'you have a lovely phone voice but I wish I'd left the rest to my imagination'.
I've just moved teams though. Doubt they will get together as we are so far apart.

The last place I worked for was way up there when it came to socialising. Most fridays, and would even be put up in a hotel occasionally if it was a big bash. Even bedded down on the workshop floor a couple of times. I think the big boss fancied one of the girls in the office, so we got dragged along as cover lol. It would start with a few drinks down the local, then off to a club and a few other pubs. Occasionally we'd end up a pole dancing club.... It's a few years on now and I think my liver has forgiven me......
