And You Guys Think This Business is Easy.....

I received this email this morning:

    hi paul
i have a bit of a problem .this machine (the 250 )has been in the workshop since november last year ,it was brand new but it got robbed for parts .it started out with the keyboard ,then the engine pwb then devs and fuser.anyway i have now got it back together .the only problem is it is showing 23,000 copies on the thing.everything else is showing correct readings .devs fuser etc 10 copies and correct serial number .do you know the secret code to reset the copy count on these beasts .its not being done as a fiddle its just that we cant sell a new machine with 23,000 copies on it.

thanks for your help (if you can )

    And my reply:
You shouldn't be selling a machine with 23,000 copies on it as new. I'm not a copier tech

Well, at least the dillweed took a slightly different angle.

    Same old asinine request, though.

What a shocker, but seriously, who would rob a brand new box of so many parts?? Something smells fishy.

Tell him the way to do it is to swap the main board with a new machine.

You're reply was very professional, much better than they would have received from me.

As for the name withheld to protect the stupid, ummm? It wasn't me!!

I can't go to the wharehouse without an escort anymore. I have this bad habit of wanting my customers up and running asap. However I do replace what I steal.

Seen this type of thing happen and it ain't pretty. A new machine gets unboxed to rob a part either for "troubleshooting purposes" or because of backorder situation. Next thing you know, the thing is stripped to the frame - that's how we tech's kept our parts cost low . Parts that were robbed are either never reinstalled or never ordered. Swapped parts sit on top of the machine. Time passes and this is the last one in inventory (still new) and ownership / management says "put it back together - we have it sold". Service scrambles, orders parts and guess what - the printout says it has 34k and I would be willing to bet the serial number on the printout doesn't match the serial number plate on the machine. Usually that data is on an eprom on the main pcb and you have to get the mfg rep involved. Depending on the particular manufacturer it can vary from being really easy or damn near impossible. Xerox had us audit every single 260 in the field because of this and they were convinced that someone was counterfeiting. Good luck!
