do you do your own oil change?

    yes!

thought I save some money while at it, I figure $20 saved with dino juice, and $40 saved with full synthetic in DIY fashion.

1yr gone by, the new car is almost at 40,000km...

Yup. Watch the parts stores for package deals. Found a deal awhile back for 5 quarts & a filter for $14.99US. Bought the limit for all my vehicles.

I do everything else I can, too. Pumps, belts, brakes, bearings, heads, whatever... But I'm very fortunate to have a good friend who's a professional mechanic. He doesn't do it for me. He supervises. The whole "give a man a fish..." thing. I've learned quite a lot through the years -- enough to be glad I'm a copier guy!
I wish he had a copier. He'd never pay a service bill. I owe him big.

I used to do all the work on my cars. I've been a marine engineer for almost 7 years, not in the last 5 years though.
But now days , I own a brand new car, which means any work I do could void my warranty.

No way. When I drove a 67 SS Chevelle, I did it all, but the truck belongs to the boss, and we have accounts all over town to do the work.

I used to change my own oil and rotate my own tires. I've fixed radiator hoses, changed batteries, wiper blades, radiator fluid, brake fluid, and lubed door hinges that got squeaky. That's pretty good for a girl. I bet some of your wives can't do that. But, honestly, after I hit my 40's I appreciate others doing it for me and don't mind paying them for it. Kind of like getting my hair or nails done. I could do it myself, but why?
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

Agreed; I haven't done my own nails in years.

Absolutely. $14.00 for 5 qts and filter vs. nearly $40.00 at an oil change center. And I'm faster than they are.

Not ever. I can write off most of the expense at tax time, so why monkey with my car?

I just sold my 2002 Toyota Corolla with 344,000km, safetied and e-tested. Dealer serviced every 8,000km +/-200km, no exceptions. Was a great car but I never turned a wrench on it. That's not to say I couldn't, just my preference not to. We now have fleet vehicles, so it is a resounding NO now.

I've got a local place that will do the oil change for $12.00
I can't even buy the supplies for that.

I used to rotate the tires myself, until it was inferred that I was doing it wrong.

Re: do you do your own oil change?

I definitely change my own oil, trans fluid, filters, etc. At about 50k a year, I can't afford to take my car to someone every couple of weeks or so. I only take my car in for stuff I can't possibly do on my own, like alignments. I had to take my latest car in to get the trans filter changed. Apparently the filter is "dealer only". Couldn't find it at any of the parts stores, and it looks like a giant headache, as it comes out the front of the transaxle, not the bottom.
I don't do tires, either. I found a tire place that does great work on the cheap, so that's one less thing to worry about.

<---- I do all my own custom body work too!
